'THE PICTORIAL FIELD•BOOK OF THE
WAR OF 1812; or Illustrations by "pen
and pencil. of the History, Biography,
Scenery, Relics and Traditions of the
late war for American, Independence,
by Benjamin J. Losaing, with 'several
hundred engravings on wood, by
Lossing and Barrit, chiefly from orig
inal sketches by the author. Pub.
lished by Harper and. Brothers, New
York.
Few American authors received
more substantial evidence - of popular
favor than Mn. LOBBING, at the time his
"Pictorial Field : Book of the Revolution"
was published. The author showed
singular ability in the construction ,of the
important features of that great historical I
event. Rare discrimination was also
shown in the grouping of the facts and
incidents of that remarkable period. No
labor or expense was spared to make it
fulland complete. - His fame as an author
was;4established by that monumental
work. For many , years' since Mr. Lea
sing has devoted himself to preparing this
companion volume on the war of 1812.
It is a'co ntinuation of the history of our
country from the clOse of the Revolution
of 1788 to the end of the Second War e
with Great Britain inlBls. To' acCom
plish and complete this herculean
task, the inthor, has traveled more
than ten, thousand miles in this I
country and in the Canadas, with note
book and pencil in hand, visiting places
of historic interest connected with the
War of 1812, from the Great Lakes to the
Gulf of Mexico. Undue haste has not
been manifested in its preparation, but
facts and papers have been carefully ana
lyzed so as not to distort history. 'The
sketches of the distinguished actors in
that eventful war, and the places of con
filet, are expressed in terse, crispy lan
gunge, without anything of the sensa
tional. The mere.delineation of men and
things connected with the War in itself,
is sufficient to awaken thrilling interest.

WEDLOCK; OR, THE :RIGHT RELATIONS
OF Tae SEXES. Disclosing the laws of
conjugal selections, and showing who
may and who may not marry. By S.
R. 'Wells, author of “New Physl og .
omy," editor of the Phrenological
Journal, etc. Published by Samuel
. R. Wells, NSW York.
Works of this character are not
expected to be perfect, as the question of
marriage and its relations are viewed
from different stand points. This work
contains however much that is 'commen
dable, Indeed it is an excellent compen
dium of historical facts on this subject,
and will save readers much labor from
seeking from various sources. There is
also much practical and sensible knowl
edge communicated on different topics re
lating to wedlock, that are worthy to be
observed. Many will differ with the
author on some points, especially so far
as relates to .phrenology and physiology,
though the views of the author are not
pressed, neither are his religious opinions.
Ase.acire. By C. Hoilland. Published
• by J. B. Lippincott & Co., Philadelphia.
The plain matter.of-fact.style of this
work will impress the reader at the out :
set: ' There is very little effort to be sen
sational, indeed a little vein of this staip.
might help it. The story itself is ore do
mestic type, in which the lights and
shades of married life are wrought , out
under a cloud of 'trials and hindrances.
Its erowning ylrtue however, aside from
the harsh style of the dai,' is the fine vein
of religious sentiment running through It.
This fact will lead many persons to read
it. ;The discipline of this farmer's Baugh•

Teacher, the Pam the school. By
Nathaniel Sands:- Published~ by-Har
per Qt Brothess, New York.
Barely have we found so much sensi
_ble informal on impressed ta a work of
sixty pages. .I Mr. Sands deals with these
questions in plain' ords, and his ,views
are worthy of thoughtful consideration.'
The.first part treats of the relation of
teachers and training, in which the office
of teacher is regarded as; 2e that shculd
be °dimpled by the best and "purest per
sons, that education sis absorption; and
pupils should have help according to their
ability to and rstand what they are taught.
The seconddiscourses of teaching and
training, andithi third "to the school in
general. Mr. Sands'very properly argues
that the youngest pupils , ahould'have the
beet teachers, from the fact that a child
cannot advance to the teacher, as an older
pupil, but depends wholly on what the
teacher imparts. His views in regard to
a practical, scientific education, in place
( I
o 'the study of dead languages, are correct
rid in time will be the rule and not the
aception. His views of boarding schools
are In the HIS/I1 correct," but are too broad
and sweeping. A good boarding institu
tion is a blessing in many respects.
- 'UNCLE JOHN'S FLOWER GATHERERS. A

By Jane Jay Fuller. Published by. M.
W. Dodd, New York. Por sale by R.
S. Davis de Co. Pittsburgh.
- This is a charming book for yonngpeo
. ple, indeed old people may profit by its
reading. The central character, around
whom cluster a bevy of boys and girls,
is a cripple, highly educated and wealthy.
Each chapter contains the weekly reun
ion . of the little flower-gatherers at the"
mansion of Uncle John,, who describes
the qualities of the flowers brought brought to
him. The work is entirely in story form,
and very entertaining. By this method
the beautiful science of Botany Is unfold..
ed clearly, and in a way likely to leave
permanent impressions. It is high toned
and worthy of; place anywhere.

JOHN AND THE DEMIJOHN. A. Temoer
ance Tale. By Julia fdeNair Wright,
author of "Almost a Nan," etc. Pub
lishedby Henry Hoyt, Boston. For
eale , b , F. G. Heineman, Third avenue,
'Pittsburgh.' .
This Work delineates the history of a
boy who was overcome, step by step,
with strong drink, until he finally died a
terrible death, all from the use of the in
toxicating bowl. The lesson taught In this
sad but thrilling story should be a beacon
light to youths, and a warning to thcm to
abstain from the use of . liquor. Parents,
especially 'Mothers, will find words of
warning and caution, to avoid placing
the tempting bowl in reach of their chil.
dren. Thousands are ruined by the care
lessness of parents, and by their example,
in 'having liquor in their houses. The
work ought to do goad.

R. S. Davis tt Co., Pittsburgh.
Prof. Leavitt, the author of This poem,
received high enconiums from the press
generally for his poetic genius in his pre
vious poems of a tragic character. We
do not propose to give the different parts
of the plot of the "Siege of Babylon,"
and simply commend its flowing style
and elevated tone. The author possesses
strong descriptive powers.? ,

MANDRAKE P/LLS will cure Consumption,
Liver Complaint and Dyspepsia, it taken accord;
lug to directions. They are all three to be taken
at the same time. They cleanse the stomach, re
lax the liver and lout It to work; then the appetite
becomes good; the food digests and makes good
blood; the patient begins to grow in flesh: the
diseaaed matter ripens into the lungs, and the
patient outgrows the disease and gets welt. This
is the only way to curt consumption. -
To/these three medicines Dr. J. H. Schenck. of
Philadelphia. owes his unrivaled success I;' the
treatment of pulmonary Consumption. The Pei
atonic Syrup ripens the morbid matter in the
lungs, nature throws it off by an easy expectora
tion, for when the phlegm or matter is ripe a
snail* cough will throw it off, and the patient has
rest and the lungs begin to heal.
T . do th the, be:tweed 'ionic and Mandrake
Pille must be ireely used to cleanse the stomach
and liver, so that the Pnlmunic Syrup and the
food will make good blood.
Schenck's Mandrake Pills act upon the liver,
removing all °barn tions. relax the (mats of the
gall bladder, the MI starts freely, and the liver
Is soon relieved; the stools will show what the

which this preparatio is made et, assists the
stomach to tnrow out the gastric Juice to dissolve
the food with the Plum nichyrup, and it is made
into good b. ood withon fermentation or souring

The great. reason wh physicians do not cure
.Consumption is, they t to do ton much; they
give medicine to stop th cough, to step chills,to
stop night sweats, hecticfever, and biersdoing
they derange the whole digestive lock

Is not only the lungs tha t are wasting, but It is
the whole body. The stomach and liver have lost
