PIrrSBUIIGH MARKETS. Orrict or Prrrsnumor GAZETTE, WEDNICSDAr s August, 18 1869. The general markets present nothing really new or important. Operators in grain manifest considerable anxiety in regard to the future course of the mar - ket, and, as a general thing, they are timid about doing anything at present, being, as already intimated, very ap pretuntlive about the future. As noted in our last reoort, the general impres sion is that wheat is too much inflated, particularly in_ the west, and that' in view of the immense crop which has just been secured, it is hardly poSsible that present prices' can be sustained for any length of time. And what wahave said in regard to wheat, is equally ap pliable to flour, as thh one, as a matter of course, sympathizes with the other. OFFICE OP Primmunort GALwrik, WEDNESDAY, August 18, 1869. There is considerable interest mani fested just now to find out the stock of Crude oil in this place. Of course, there is no data from which to furnish state " ment of this kind, and the only way to get at it would be for each refiner, spec lator a'nd dealer to 'report the amount in their possession, and this, it is not at all 'likely, they all would be willing to do, al though we cannot see what damage they would sustain therefrom. We have made „considerable Inquiry among operators in regard to their views on htis point, and as might be expected, they differ 'very materially; some place it is as low as 100,000 bbls, while others, equally as well posted, put it at 200,000 and others again, at 275,000 and edbn 300,000. There is one thing certain, however, the receipts for some time past have been remarkably light, and taking the past two weeks we .do' not believe that the daily arrivals will average over 2,000 bbls per day. This.does not look well for the trade, particularly at.this season of the year; if the market was in proper shape, we would certainly be receiving 4,600 in stead of 2,000 bbls per day, but this we need not expect so long as crude is so much higher relatively than refined. It is also a noticeable fact that the ship ments of Refined during tne same time are larger than the receipts of Crude, and while there is a great difference of opinion in regard to the stock of the lat ter in this market, there can be no doubt but what the stock of the former is very light, as it is being shipped east at fast as it is made. RIVIIK NEWS The river remains stationary "at this point with twenty-three inches in chan nel by metal mark. Weather cloudy with indications of rain. Mercury, 87 in shade. —The Argosy has entered the Cincin nati and Pomeroy trade. —The Fort Smith is running between Fort Smith and Fort Gibson. —No arrivals or departures excepting the slack water packets, and business at the mafn landing is completely sus pended. —Capt. J. H. Peckenhaugh has re turned to Louisville, having failed to get a boat for the Cincinnati and Evans ville trade. —The steamer Cora, that, sunk in the Missouri river, Saturday, proves to be damaged beyond redemption, and the Kate Kinney has gone up to strip her of everything that can be taken off. —A Zanesville dispatch says the Mus kingum river is lower than at any time this season. The Carrie Brooks has been compelled to lay up for want of water. The steamer Julia No. 2is laid up at Zanesville undergoing repairs for the fall trade. —The Dubuque Herald, of Saturday, says: The Lansing, made famous by the °apt, sion a few years ago, has been sold to run between New Boston and Quincy. The Chicago Burlington Quincy Railroad Company was the purchaser, at a price not far from 86,000. —Mr. A. A. White, who for a long time Past has officiated as second clerk Of the Mary McDonald, has received the appointment as clerk of the mag nificent Deßtissey. Mr. J. C. Enyart, the present clerk of the Deßussey, re turns to St. Louis to his old position in Colonel Macomb's office. — W o rkbri at Parkersburg, is going ahead finely. dge The first pier in the river has been com pleted to above high water mark, and the other ones are being pushed forward vigorously. There are now about five hundred hands employed, who work mostly night and day, and it is the in tention of the company to advance with the work as far as possible before cold weather sets in, so that it can be prose cuted at all stages of water. —The New Albany Ledger, of Satur day, says: The river reporter of the Louisville Courser-Journal stirred up the bile in Capt. Milt Aikin, of the Le- Claire No. 2, yesterday, and the Captain threatened to go for his mustache if he didn't apologize for sending him to the elms house by order of Mayor Mince. It was a dirty trick to connect the family of Capt. Akin with a sell, and if the cap tain did not see fit to pay a fine for assault and battery it was only because his good nature would not permit him to make it. , He certainly had cause ,sufficient, and the only wonder is that 'he did not do so. A sell is a yery good thing, but sellers should be careful not to make a Jest of a serious subject, and cause pain to innocent parties. ww , geloitt-ion-tz==l WILL I/Lll/ MILLER A, CO., Nos. 221 and 223 Liberty Street.
