OVTIVE or PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
TUESIMY, August 17, 1869.
Gold seems to have touched its, lowest
point for the present, at noon yesterday
selling at 133, from which it advanced
again to 1384, closing at 133 g. The
uncertainty of the future Treasury
movements, especially the fact whether
governments will sell any more gold
during the coming month, and what
amount of currency will be put out for
the purchase of bonds, keeps the busi
ness community in suspense. Con.
Untied disbursements would keen
the money market easy during a period
where large stigaments of currency have
to be made south and west for the mov
ing of cotton and grain, whilst on the.
other'hand, a pinch in the money mar
ket woull carry down gold and bonds.
If gold could permanently be kept
down, this anticipated stringency would
be a great benefit to the country, but
low prices for gold at present, would
stimulate imports to such an extent,
that all our rich crops will barely suf
fice to pay fir the excess of imports.
Government bonds still further de
clined to-day, but were steady at the
lowest point, with some inquiry tor
bonds for investment; it seems, how
ever, as it bonds would go down still
further.
Stocks are dull but steady. Money
in sufficient supply during the dull
season, but an active money market is
anticipated, and banks are preparing
for it. -

PITTSBURGH MARKETS.
OFFICE OF PITTSBURGH GAZETTE, t
TUESDAY, August, 17 1869.
The most important feature we have
to notice to-day is a material decline in,
Wheat at Chicago, under the influence
it is said, of the foreign news. The
season is now sufficiently advanced to
demonstrate almost beyond a - doubt -
that a very large crop has been safely
secured, and unless there is a stiff
foreign demand, it seems almost as cer—
tain as anything can be, that prices must
go lower. Sneculation may keep it in
check for the time being,. but once the
crop commences to move freely, unless
Europe is prepared to take our surplus,
a decline seems almost inevitable. It is to
be hoped that there will be a good ex
port demand for breadstuffs, as in that
event the farmer will get a fair price for
his product, business generally would
be strengthened and improved -thereby,
and, besides, nothing could do more to
/wards bringing down gold and hasten
'forward a resumption of specie pay
ments.
The markets in a general way, pre
sent nothing really new or important.
Flour is quiet but 'firm, anu while the
demand is confined entirety to supply
ing immediate wants, prices are un
changed. Grain is unsettled and irregu
lar, while provisions are in steady de
mand and prices well sustained. We
do not remember of ever seeing more
fruit and "green truck" in this market
than at present. commission houses
are nearly all full and overflowing, and -
much of it that comes from the east,
does not more than pay freight and
commission, if it does that. Potatoes,
apples, tomatoes, peaches, pears and
other articles in same line, are being
sold almost for a song, and while this is
all very 'Comforting for the consumer,
it is bard on the shipper and producer.

TUESDAY, August 17, 1869.:
The market remains quiet without any
change in prices. The coarse and medi
um wools being generally sold Gift of
first hands . --the attention of buyers is
directed more to the fine wools. In the
eastern markets fine wools still remain
neglected and slow of sale, and -this in
duces greater caution on tbe part of buy

the season in purchasing the lower
grades. We quote fine wools at 45@55.
