FINANCE AND TRADE,
Omar, or Prrrsuuseac GASETTS,
MONDAY, August 16, 1869.
For the first time for several years
the exports have exceeded the imports,
in consequence, of which a very dull
and bearish feeling manifested itself in
the gold market. Gold opened at 134,
declined to 133%, advanced to 134 again,
and closed dull and heavy at 133 g. The
large short interest is sustaining the
market and will prevent a rapid and
sudden decline.
Government bonds still further de
clined today. - New 1865 s sold down to
119%, but rallied to 119%. The decline
has brought out but few bonds, but the
demand is reduced to - the smallest
amount.
Stocks after having sold down to
about one par cent. below Saturday's
quotations, improved again and closed
with a better feeling.
Money is quite easy with the banks,
and first-class paper can be discounted
at 8 per cent., but anything doubtful
and likely to be renewed is avoided, or
a heavy tax put on.
The high prices of Governments have
opened a fair field for our local securi
ties, which sell at improved prices.
Union and Central Pacific Railroad
bonds are in better demand.

PETROLEUM MARKET.
OFFICE OF PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
MONDAY, August 16, 1869.
The oil market opened this morning a
little excited, and considerably firmer,
under the influence of the foreign news,
but subsequently there was a reaction,
Antwerp being reported a franc lower,
and at the close the feeling was compar
tively weak, and prices, compared with
the early part of the day, declined fully
a quarter of a cent. The volume of busi
ness, however, was very light, and so
long as the market remains in its pres
ent unsatisfactory and unhealthy conflx
tion, no improvement can reasonably be
expected—so long as the manufrcturer
has no inducement to sell, so long as
crude continues relatively higher than
refined, and until there is at least a
alight margin for the refiner, just so
long will the trade be dull and stagnated
and the clog which has so long clogged
the business, will continue.
CRUDE.

make concession in order to effect sales.
