PETROLEUM MARKET.
OFFICE OP PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
SATURDAY, August 14, 1869.
REVIEW FOR THE WEEK.
There has been rather more activity in
the oil market this week, lhe volume of
business in the aggregate, being consid
erably larger than that of the week pre
ceding, and notwithstanding the feeling
is stronger an 4 prices a shade better, yet
the ineqaulity in prices still crops out and
presents a bad feature in thej trade, so
far at least as Pittsburgh is (Teemed,
and what is worse than all there seems
to be no way of removing it. The fact
that prices are higher is not always in
indication of a healthy market; as the
case now stands the manufacturer is
none the better, as; Crude has also . ad
vanced with Relined, and now, as before,
the former is much higher, relatively',
than the latter.
Receipts Crude this week, 11,234; last
week, 18,498; from January Ist to date,

PITTSBURGH MARKETS.
OFFICE OF PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
. SATURDAY, August, 14 1869.
The markets have been a little more
active this week, there having been a -
slightly increased volume of business in
the aggregate, and as harvesting is about.
completed, we may look for a still
further Improvement. There is a good
deal of interest manifested in regard to
thp grain and flour markets; prices are
unsettled and irregular, and grain oper
ators generally, are timid about doing
much until the season is a little more
advanced. Flour although firm is quiet
and dey.oid of excitement, and owing to
a strong local competition, it is said, that.
neithsr dealers or millers are making
any money.
Last year a rule was adopted by the
Chicago Board of Trade. which was in
tended to prevent unprincipled specula-
tors from getting complete control of the
markets, and.particularly to squelch out
'entirely, if possible, the "cornering"
movements, gotten up by "shysters" to
take advantlee of the trade. A move
ment is now on foot, coming, no doubt,
from these shysters, many of whom do
not knoW of what a legitimate business
consists, fo have this rule erased. The
Chicago phpers, very properly, are op
posed to the repeal, and it is not likely
that these reckless speculators, will suc
ceed in gaining their point. About this
time last year there was a "corner" in
the Chicago wheat market, causing a
heavy loss, to many honest and legiti
mate dealers, others who had all to win
and nothing to lose, failed to come to
time, and thus the only ones who did not
lose were those who belonged to the
genus properly designated as °scalpers."
