The report of the consolidation of the
Union and Central Pacific Railroads is
believed to be true, in which event the
Union Pacific Railroad would ge; 10
millions of capital ; from the Central
road, and thus advance its stock equal
to the Central line. Union bonds are(
strongly held at about 90 to 91, whilst
the company sells at 95, and Central
bonds have declined from 98 :o 96m.
Government bonds are dull and lower
to-day.
Gold is steady and quoted very firm
at 1353;; the reports concerning the bad
condition of the crops of England lack
confirmation.
Stocks are dull and inactive, but not
materially lower.

Tae most noticeable feature in the
' markets, is the excitement which pre
vails in flour and grain both east and
west, under the influence of the foreign
news, reporting bad weather and the
probability of light crops. Wheat has
advanced some eight' or ten cents in
Chicago and New York, and flotir also
is higher, but for some cause or other it
is relatively cheaper than wheat, and
this has been the case
_nearly all sum-
titer. There is no doubt but what the
markets above noted, are a little wild,
and that the rapid and material idvance
was aided by speculators, and it is al
together probable that the nreisent up
ward movement will sooner or later be fol
lowed by another movement in an op
posite direction, as one extreme general
ly follows another.
. There is more activity in fruit, ber
ries and vegetables just now than in
anything else, and if it was not for one
thing, the trade would be much better

this branch of business and
keep up prices, as it prevents an active
competition; to illustrate, the express
charges on a box of peaches from Balti
more or Philadelphia, amount to nearly
as much as the peaches will sell for
here, and what is true of peaches will
apply to any thing else of a similar kind
that comes in this - way. We are cog
nizant of some of our commission men
having refused to receive articles con
signed to them, being apprehensive that
they could not realize enough on the
consignment to pay the express charges.
Now if it was not for these extreme
charges the receipts of all kinds of fruit
from the east would he much larger,
and our people would be enabled to lay
in their winter supplies at a much less
cost.
