FINANCE. AND TRADE,
OITICEOP Prrrsannea Gem Tris,
SATUBDAX, Angus 7, 1869.
The past week was ; one of unusual
dullness in financial matters. Govern
ment bonds have not advanced ps much
as was expected, from large purchases
by the government, and quotations from
Europe are not favorable to any materi
al advance. The scarcity of bonds in
the market keeps up the price of 5.20 s
more than any investment demand by
the people.
Currency Pacific bonds are steady,
but certainly are not a very profitable
investment, at about 112, not quite yield- .
ingfive per cent., when good municipal
bonds and first-class mortgages will
bring from 8 to 10 per cent.
Gold was very dull during the week.
but the unfavorable bank statement
and higher rates of exchange give the
market a firmer appearance. A rise in
stocks, whi:h is expected during
next week will, most likely have the
died of advancing quotations.
Money in better request without any
advance-in rates.
Business more lively.
