—Last June a jewelry shop in Harris
burgh was robbed of e 4,000 worth of jew
elry. A reward of $6OO was , offered for
its recovery: A few days ago thegreater
part of the property was returned, with
a.letter appointing a time and place when
the robbers would meet the jeweler, re
turn the rest of .the property and receive
the rew, ard. As agreed, the jeweler went
and was met by two masked men who
showed him his jewels and were about to
claim the reward; when they were pounced
upon and arrested by, hitherto concealed,
policemen. They proved to be two
young men, who,. until now, Nere' con

A Curious Mirriage.
"A'bridegreore up the linden tree," is
the heading of a curious marriage story
which really occurred•a few weeks ago in
• little village pleasantly situated on the
banks of . the Rhine. A certain land
owner of , the Village had a daughter who
was courted by a neighboring swain; and
after the lattethad got the promise of the
old gentleman, his future father-iti•law
to make over the homestead to himself,
the marriage day was fixed. The day
was Sunday, and the guests bad assem
bled from far and wide. They.
,hail
ready begun to make the marriage pro
cession, when suddenly the bridigroom
'was found to have disappeared, and in
spite of all the searching, in the yard, in
the barn, stable, and • intim neighboring.
houses, not the least trace of him could
be found. The bride wept binerly at her
lover'speceptloni and-everybody heaped ,
abuse upon the missing one. Fmally ,
one of the searchers was successful
in discovering the bridegwom in the
thickly-leafed summit of a large linden
tree which stood at the back of the house.
All the guests then ran to look at him;
some began to abuse him for making such
a spectacle at that critical moment, while
the parish pastor addressed some pretty
sharp words about his conduct. The
young man, however, did not seem in
clined to come down and fulfill his en
gagement, but began, - to " explain, from
where he was perched, what was the mat
ter. He said that his intended father-in
law bad promised faithfully before the be
trothal to transfer his land to him, (the
bridegroom,) but the promise had been
staved off from day to day, and at the
time of speaking it was not fulfilled. ' He
would, therefore, not enter the portal of
the church until the, old gentleman, had
done his duty. And in spite of all pro
testation by the guests and the old man,
the village schoolmaster had at last to be
tent, for to make out the contract; and
only after this was signed; sealed and de
livered, did the delinquent descend from
the linden tree and take his sobbing bride
to church.
The Utterly Disengaged Bachelor.
He is generally under five•and-twent3P,
for we do not allude to old bachelors.
He dresses well, but not anxiously. • It
does not so much matter to him if his
gloves are not, buttoned, or If the parting
of his back hair is not quite straight. His
whole manner is that of a man who owns
himself; who has no one to think of

from some prt of the city, and is run on
the track before being ,halted. In either
case, as soon as a full stop occurs, screw
lifts are placed wader the front and hind.

thus prepared to be lifted, are at the same
time unfastened; the vehicle is then tilted
over a few inches by means of the screws, '
the two loosened wheels are 'slipped off
and two others are at once put 'on with
rims to fit the rails if the conveyance is out

omnibus is leaving the . railroad to pass

as soon as it is complete, the order for a

AN Ealwrnquarchrs PEEnrcran.L.—A
veg general excitement bas been caused
in ern by the publication of the prophe
cy of a German astronomer, asserting that
on the 10th, 11th and 12th -of August of
this year, preliminary shocks of earth
quake will be felt in Peru and Ecuador'
to be followed on the 20th of September
or October by s t movement of the earth in
that region. and along the line of the An-
des Mountains generally. that will be per
fectly appalling in its effects. This pre.
diction has, it appears, created wide
spread terror smug the Peruvians, and
many families are now preparing to - seek
places of greater security.. The astrono
mer cannot ascertain to a certainty wheth
er the grand rupture will occur in Sep
tember or October, but that it be on
or about the 20th he is cdafident. He af
firms that he has predicted earthquakes
before with perfect accuracy.
&sin years since, a young lady of
Hartford, who had for sometime enjoyed
the reputation of being, in the Tallest
sense of the term, a coquette. incurred
the displeasure of an admirer by the ap
parent favor with which she received the
attentions of a rival. ' , Torn by the
pangs of jealousy," he hurried home,
and throughmany tears penned a hasty
and rather harsh note, with which he en
closed one or two letters he had received
in:happier days, asking a similar return,
and a discontinuance forever of further
conimunidtion. , The young fatly wrote
a reply, thanking him for his kind con
sideration in sending back her ,letters,
and regretting her inability to return hie
immediately as she had lent them to a
young_ gentleman to read, and he had
not feturned them yet. Such refreshing
coolness during a heated term deserves
admiration.
CoktldON STEEL may, it is claimed, be
endowed with the properties of the finest
casts:lntel, and when burned be brought
back to its original condition by the use
of •it tempering liquid invented by ,a
French locksmith. His bath is prepared
by adding two pounds of hydrochloric
acid, 800 grains of nitric acid (specific

zinc, and about three onpcee of tripoli to
about four gallons of water. A piece of
cast iron weighing about three'ounces is
to be placed in this liquid, and allowed to
