We haerd no special cause assigned lbr

was not much inquiry, and that there
was a little more disposition manifested to
sell than on Monday. •Tere is still

' RIVER NEWS.
The river, under the influence of the
recent rains, is again rising at this point
with five feet aii inches in 'the channel
by the Monongahela marks. Weather
continues cloudy and °unsettled with oc•
caslonal showers. Mercury at 5v.M. 86

No arrivals, or departures aside from
the packets.
The Julia No. 2, departed for Zanes
ville, with a fair trip including some 70
or 75 tons, which she will transfer to the
Kate Putnam at Wheeling.
The R. C. Grey, Capt. Isaac Whittaker,
is filling up steadily. for Cincinnati and
Louisville, and will take her departure
to-day. She will receipt freight through
to New Orleans.
Com. W. J. ;Counts, has gone to Sioux
City, on hi:minces, we presume, connect
ed with some of his mountain boats.
—The Messenger was advertised to
leave Cincincinnati for Pittsburgh on
Monday.
—Captain Dan. Maratta has retired
from the river, and is living at Roches
ter, Penna., carefully nursing and tend
ing his health, which, we are glad to
learn, has greatly improved.
—Mr. Walter Maratta, late of the John
H. Groesbeck, has assumed charge of
the office of the Cincinnati and New Or
leans packet, Emma No. 3, Mr. Jas. Mc-
Connell having retired and returned to
his home in Rochester.
—The Omaha Republican, of Wednes
day, says: The steamer..Suaset sunk
yesterday :Moult 180 miles above Omaha.
Mr. John Green is a loser by the catas
trophe to the amount of :6,500. We fail
ed to learn the particulars further than
that no lives wore lost.
—The Loniqville Courier• Journal, of
SatUrday, says: The little steamer Pine
Bluff, which has held a place among
“boats in port" for over six months, has
at last got out of the clutches of the myr
midons of the law, and will leave for
Kanawha river today, in command of
Captain Bates.
—The Madison Courier, of Thursday,
says: Bob Rea and Slater have made.ar, -
rangements to take the bar of the Nat.
Williams for a year. We understand
the price paid was $3,000. She will prob
ably enter the Kentucky river trade.
Her cabin has been lengthened, and she
hatample accommodations for passen
gers.
—The Vieksburgh Times, of Wednes
day, says: Business on the river is dull,
and they haye a queer way of "raising
the wind" at Lake Providence. A gen
tleman down from that city of the
swamps says the wharfboatjhere charg
es twenty-live cents for the privilege of
walking ocross it, which is necessary to
be able to get to a boat.
—The towboat Panther arrived at
Louisville on Friday, having In tow the
Virginia, which boat it will be remem
bered broke both her shafts•a few weeks
since while on her way to this port from
New Orleans. Her misfortunes did not
end there, for as she was coming up she
ran afoul of a snag at Hobb's Point and
damaged tier guard considerably.

—The St. Louis Democrat, says: While
the Natrona lay here on Tuesday, a in
box lying'in the office, containing a con
siderable sum of money, disappeared.
The thief was seen on the Gartside, lying
alongside, by -officers of the Gartaide,
who spoke to him but did - not suspect
the character of their visitant. Some
time after, the carpenter found the box,
broken open, and lying in a heap of
trash. Be delivered it on board the
Natrona yesterday on her arrival, The_
thiet missed the larger portion of the
greenbacks which was inclosed in an en
velop and other paper, but rifled one or
two pocket books of smaller sums, in
his haste throwing the balance away as
worthless. Moral to steamboat clerks—
don't go away from your office leaving
the door open and boxes of money lying
around.

Construct Iron-Clod Additions to
their Present Works.

SECTIONI. Be it ordained and enacted by the
City of Pittsburgh, in Select and Common Court
cits assembled, cm/ 'it is hereby ordained and
enacted by the authority of the same. That Hus
sey, Wells Co. be and they are hereby author
-Ized to construct iron clad additions t) their
present works, as Inflows: One addition to rear
of mill on corner 17th and Pike streets, along
Mulberry alley. 65 by 55 feet. Also, an addl.
Lion to Chop fronting on tiolumbla street. running
towards 17th Street 83 by 100 feet: also to re
build store room on 171 h street. 25 feet square.
SEC. 2. That any ordinance or part of ordi
nance conflicting with the passage of this ordi
nance at the present time, be and the came is
hereof repealed so far as the same affects this or
dinance.
Ordained and ; enacted into a law in Councils,
this 118th day of June, 1809.
