• AN exchange says: An intelligent trav
eler, named Jonas Wells, from Ritchie
county, West Virginia, called at our of
fice yesterday, and stated that he had just
been delivered from a certain death-that
a spider which entered his head and was
preying upon the iiralii had been - . extrica

stances are these: Oti Tuesday night last,
•Mr. Wells found itimself in the country,
.and Wishing to "turn' in" for the night,
laid down upon some straw and wassoon
wrapped': in the arms of Morpheous.
Durinkhis 'sluinbe.r, it is supposed, the
spider was out late at night and coming _
in mistook the stranger's ear for his web
and accordingly crept in; unconscious to
the sleeping, weary man. On awakening
in the morning, Mi. W.'experiencell pain
in his head, but did not -Concern hhnsell
-much about it, thinklnk it - would soon
pass away. He suffered the most excru
ciating pain, the effects of whiCh almost
made bim blind and he concluded to
wend Lis way to town and seek medical
aid to relieve• his misery. He sought a.
drug store, and entering requested the
clerk to drop from a feather &small quan
tity of turpentine into his ear. No soon
er had the fluid reached the spot than a
clever sized spider hopped out and was
captured by the druggist. He says he
could distinctly hear and feel something
working sued gnawing as if at his brain,
from which haaullered the most intense
pain. No doubt had the insect remained
in his head longer, it would have reached
the brain and death would certainly have
been theresult. He is now entirely re
lieved. •
ARE WE WOMARIZINGI
It has been said, and apparently not

The fingers, says this pleasant Gaul, of.
America are lengthening, and assuming
such terminal sharpness as to indicate
simial tendencies. So Well appreciated,
indeed, he continues, are these tendencies,
that gloves made in Paris for the Ameri

of - rules, as to the length of the &tigers,
that does not prevail in the case of goods
made for consumption by any other_kid-,

contimiitY; — lt'ieerns, in Shoit, - though
`in a sense not - before dreamed of,' an age
of "modern instancei;" Particular cases
are generalized into rules with a celerity
that speaks much for7,6ur brilliancy, but
very little indeed for - our soundness. To '
illustrate, we met the - other day in a paper
the broad head.line "Life in the-West."
The article immediately following was a
telegram time some far 'Western State,
giving an acctinnt;' :a distressing
quarrel, in which' two men ,'.had
fought,. and one . .:killed-;_. the othef
with a bowie-knife.;,: - was:, not
stated but that • .in Eastern city
there might havo.been an affair similar in
its incidents, mor was the allegation made
that the homicide w as other th an an ex
ceptiong occtirieneei in:the locality indi
cated to the telegram; as indeed the exist
ence of the telegram itself Drovedf.since
an everpdaymetter wonldnot have been
deemed important-enough to telegraph.
And yet, though this was an exceptional
case, tind'ilight have Occurred anywhere,
the title to the intelligence was "Life in
the West," leaving' the inference, of
course that cutting people open with
howielnives is quite the ordinary thing
in. Western: society. And est `this was
the idea in the mind of the journalist
when preparing a titlefor his telegram the
reader
.can readilxperceive. Murder was ,
evidently the editorial 'reasoning; mu rder
in" the West; hang it, they are always
killing folks out there, and down went the
heading "Life in the West." Now this
kind of reasoning is not masculine, but
feminine. ; A thoroughly masculine mind
would say, Man killed—sad affair; and
down it would go as "A Man killed at
The diffsrence . is noticeable.
The masculine mind perceives that it is
one man killed at one point, and records
it as just what it _is.' an instance. The
womanized mind,: instantly genetalizes
the special point, into the whole Nest,
and the particular slayer into the general
tendency of the entire population. This
is precisely the feminine mode of xatioci
nation. At the mention of a man slashed
to death, the blood and rashes intensify
themselves - before . the womae. Where
was he killed ? Out West. "Ugh !" she
cries, "I wouldn't live out West for the
world."
,
'With this the reader is in possession of
what we mean bathe womanizing ten
dency of American mind; and may form
his own estimate as to how far that ten
dency prevails, For our own part, we
are inclinedlo believe that it exists to
a much greater extern than is altogether
consistent'with.a state of general intel
lectual health. That it makes men more
sympathetic is no doubt true, but quite
as true, we fancy, that it rendirs them
less just. Woman is more sympathetic
than man, and, yet a chief Justice, bench,
bar and jury, in petticoats, wouid be apt to
make wild work with any ordinary dock
et, tutor them as you might in the learning
of the law. That rigid continuity of
thought which has reflection for its syn
onyme is not for woman, and yet if man
recedes from it while woman does not
approach ; it is easy to seethat the corela
tion of mental forces becomes impaired.
The practical effect of this derangement
is often grievous, for there are not kicking
those who, while free from it themselves,
do not scruple to use it in others for
their own purposes. - A remarkable in-
stance of such use we remember in a late
debate In'Congress, where one of the
most sinewy and thoroughly masculine
minds in the House, addnced, 'as the
ground.of a prOposed act of legislation
that would have greatly Affected at least
four million persons, a very remarkable,
and, so far as ourreadingand observation
go, altogether unparalleled circumstance
of a purely personal nature. To suppose:-
that the fallacy of .his generalization was
not known to .the members: in question
would be to insult an exceedingly adute
intelligence, and that, eknowink itio be a
fallacy, he put it forth as-good reason in
a singular evidence'of his belief in, and
disposition to take advantage of, a preva
lent deterioration of the Amicast logical
tone. To generalize instariCes, tben; to
make the exception, hot the proof of the
rule, bait g i
o rule, s"the peculiarity, we
repeat, of the feminine inteltedt; and the
question is, whether `the masculine mind
isnot exhibiting a teudenv, to the 'same
mode of ratiocination,oron.cther words
