Gold opened strong at 135% to 135%;
but declined toward the close' of busi
ness, to 135 g firm. Buyers of gold are
good houses wno expect an early rise of
some magnitude. The only bears in the
market are some foreign bankers who
count on a lively export business in
bonds, and consequently redueed
specie shipments. If the government
sales would lsegin again on a larger scale,
a sharp decline of two or even three per
cent. would inevitably follow, and on
this the hope of those who are short, are
depending.
Government bones remain dull, with
a very light business. The uncertainty
about the government's financial policyr
for the next month prevents large opend
ations for either.rise or. fall, and
bonds
are more liberally offered to allow of
an upward movement on account of
scarcity of bonds for delivery.
Stocks are firm in New York roads,
also Express shares. The western
railways shares are inactive.
Money is getting scarce in our local
markets, whilst business-is dull.

The oil market was rather quiet and a
little weak to-day, though compared
with yesterday prices have undergone

no quotable change. It would appear
that it was the New York "shorts" that
bought the large lots sold within the
past day or two. New York it seems is
largely "short" for this month, while, on
the other hand, Pittsburgh is largely -
`gong," and as a consequence,
she
former is disposed to be "bearish" , _
the latter "bullish"—the one is inter
ested in having higher prices, while tne
other is bringing every influence to bear • .
