The Democratic candidate for Governor
of Pennsylvania gets the following "first
rate notice" in The Hartford Post:
A little more than a year ago, in the
sweltering heat of purgatorial Tammany,
we first heard of Asa Packer. The full
voiced Perlin was calling the roll of
States. Mr. Eaton, on behalf of "the
sterling and gallant Democracy of my
little Commonwealth," had named the
Hon. James E. English as a candidate
for the Presidency; Maine had nominated
igen:Hancock; Ohio bad named Pehdle
ton; the serene , Tilden liad•broached the
best butt of the season in Sanford E.
Church; New Jersey had Bet up Joel
Parker; and Pennsylvania was called.
At once there rose up a damp vision of
that auditory, a human form with both
hands full of manuscript. It was not the
"ancient mariner." nor did be "fix" any
body "with his glittering
• eye." It was
Judge Woodward of Pennsylvania; and
he "fixed" the whole crowd with one of
the most dismal obituaries thit ever fol
lowed a politician home. Judge Wood
ward read his*hole heap of manuscript.
He described his man before,he named
him. Twenty minutes description—think
of it—in mannscript- 7 read slowly and de
liberately—intened at; that—to an. audi
ence of seven or eight thousand—every
man a rivulet of perspiration—all impa
tient for a ballot—ia an ,atmosphere blue
with blasphemy! and reeking with rum—
dust think of, that man standing on a bench
in Tammany Hall, amid such surround
ings, drenched in his own sweat, reeling
off a couple of columns of biographical
stuff, and tying on the end of it all "the
name of Asa Packer of Pennsylvania."
It was.two miles of slow Match to one fire
cracker--poor fire-cracker at that. When
he concluded, there did not arise
"—So wild a yell
As all the fiends from Heaven that fell
lieka raleed . tl;l3 imnnerc.Ty of hell.,
No, there did not. It was too warm to
yell—tor Asa Packer; so nobody yelled.
A few smiled—some in their seats—
others at neighboring bars. —lt pains us
to say, that in the buzz that went round
all the reporters' tables when the gifted
Woodward sat down, the only clearly dis
tinguishable sentence was Life conundrums
that leaped with a very large H, from desk
to desk, "Who in H— is Asa Packer?"
The Situation in Virginia.
A correspondent of the New York
Times, who believes Governor Walker to
be a sincere Republican, gives the
following reasons
_why his courage is
likelY soon to be tested:.
But
But political power in Virginia , has
always been concentrated in the General
Asoembly, and this body, as first elected,
is largely conservative or Democratic; is
composed in a large majority of the class
of. Men who, in 1868, made • vicorous
opposition to the Underwood Constitu
tion, to the Reconstruction acts of Con
gress, and to Grant and Colfax. They
were violentlip.G'onfeckrate; they are pro
scriptively opposed .to Republicans and
Repubtieanitm; and it is morally impos
sible for Governor Walker, unless he
consents to be their sycophantic tool, to
avoid an early breach with them. The
Governor elect has, to the party which
supported him, a band of good Republi
cans of influence and practical talents,
who' will stand by him in any controversy
that may arise with his Confederate sup.
porters; and he will always have-it in his
powerby a manly course •of conduct,
and by an honest adherence to Republican
principles, to draw to his support the
regular Republican party of the State.
But yon very plainly see that while Re
publican principles have had a grand
moral triumph in Virginia. the real battle
of parties has yet to befought, on this, the
most important battle ground of the
South. And I pray that the good Re
publicans of the North may not misjudge
our case, or blind themselves to the criti
[ cal situation of our affairs here. I think
they may beperfectly content with the
election of Gov. Walker.
The great source of danger and of mis
chief is the Legislature elect. Upon the
complexion of this body depends the ques
tion whether Virginia is to be permanent
ly Republican or permanently Demociatic
—permanently at war or permanently at
peace with the Union. Itis a body which
the Republicans of the North and which
the Republican party of Congress should
keep'their eyes constantly upon. ' recol
lecting that the present policy of the op
position, here as elsewhere; is to dissem
ble their real sentiments and to gain the
confidence of the dominant party - of the
Union in order to betray it.'
Tile Debts of tae states.

at the close of the rar, 1868 stood as fol

Total State debts
In 1867 8 the several States reduced
their debts about $18,000,000, and at the
close of the present year will show an
equal reduction, and that, too, without
any increase of the rate of taxation. The
great bulk of the debt is due by a few
States thus :

blood, the patient begins to grow in flesh; the
diseased matter ripens into the lungs, and the
patient octgrows the. disease and gets weh. This
is e only \way to cure consumption.
T: these three medicines Dr. J. H. Schenck, of

rest and the lungs begin to heal.
T . do this, the Sea Weed 'ionic and Mandrake
Pills must be freely used \to cleanse the stomach
and liver. so that the Prill7nic Syrup and the
food well make good blood.
Schenck's Mandrake Pills act upon the liver,

Liver Complaint's one of the most prendnent
causes of Consumption.
Schenck's Seaweed Tonic is a gentle stinihituit
and alterative. and the alkali in the Seaweed,
which this preparation is made ot, assists the
stomach to turow oat the gastric juice to dimly :

In the stomach. .
The great reason why physiciaes do not cure
Consumption is, they try to do too ranch: they

ing up the seeret.ons , and eventually the patient
sinks and dies.
Dr. Schenck, In his treatment, does not tr y to
stop a cough, night sweats, chills or fever. Me.
move the cause and they will all stop of their
own accord. No one can be cured of Consump
tion, Liver Complaint, Dyspepsia. Catarrh,
Canker, lllcerated - Throat, unless the liver and
stomach are nude healthy.
. .
It a person has consumption, of coarse. the
rings In some way are diseased, either tubercles,
abeessee, bronchial Irritation, pleura adhesion,
or the lungs are a mass of inflammation and fast
dee, aying. In such cases what must be done? It
Is not only the lungs that are Wasting, but it is
the whole body. The stomach Sod liver have lost
their power to make blood out of to d. Now Inc
only chance is to tage Dr. Schenck's three medi
cines, which will bring up a tone to the stomach,
the patient will begin to want food. It will digest
easily and make good blood; then the patient 'w
iring to gain iu flesh, and as soon as the body be
gins to grow, the lungs commence to heal up,
and the patient gets &Shy and well. This is toe
only way to cure Consumption.
When there is no lung disease and only Liver
Complaint and Dyspepsia, Schenck's Seaweed
Tonic and Mandrake Pills are sufficient, without
the Pulmonic Syrup. Take the Msnorake Pills
freely In Ai billions complaints, as they are Per
fectly harmless.
Dr. Schenck. who has enjoyed uninterrupted
health for many years past, and now weighs 935
