Wunstinnui, July 21, 1869.
The gold market is almost unchanged,
opening at 135 on the better bond quo
tations from London, but advancing im
mediately to 135%, and closing at 135%
to 135'. It is almost certain that gold
has touched - its lowest point for the
present, and an upward movement is
likely to set in at any moment.
Government bonds are drill and heavy
with light fluctuation. Several lots of
bonds are on the way back from Europe,
and as soon as bonds of return ship
ments make their appearance in the
market here, low quotations are looked
far.
Stocks are drill, having declined
slightly, and are gradually selling down
again despite the easy money market.

WEDNESDAY, IJuly 24,1869. • •
The general market centinnes c.
and neglected, and there is no prosP
•
at present of any immediate imprck
meat. As is usual at this season of •
year, - the demand for almost everyth
is restricted mainly to supplying inn
diate wants, while in regard to val
there are no important changes.
The weather has been more - favori
for harvesting during the past two de
and late advices would indicate t
the damage sustained by the rec.
'rains has been consider ably exage:_
ed. -In this section of the country
wheat is mostly all cut, and a good d
of it housed. A gentlemen who I
spent some ten days in Washington
and knows whereof he speaks, says ti
the crop is larger in that county than
has been since 1855, and we have
doubt that this is true of all the count
in western Penneylvaniii. •
A corresdondent of the Davenp
Gazette makes the.following timely ,
dress to the weather croakers: , "Leh
look back at 1858. Up to the 'l4th
June of that year we had ahnost c'
slant rains, with furious storms of tta
der, lightning and wind. The growl,
crops promised a large yield, and eve'
thing was promising. The weather tt
set in blazing hot, and so continued 1
til the 9th of July, when we had ab.'
three weeks of hot, cloudy, rai
weather. Spot and rust set in, and ac
all prospect of a crop failed. Some I
niers refused to cut their grain, 8,
others offered to sell the crop as it etc
for from sto $lO. The majority, he
ever, saved their crops in a damai
condition. After the sth of August
weather continued hot and dry, w
occasional showers. With all these e , •
advantages a larger amount •of
was harvested, and those who croak
loudest in June were surprised to ti
they had a crop, and that it broui

I see less reason to fear this seas
than in 1858. The crops are heavy,
- spot and rust have done but little hart
some of the grain is down, but it is
tangled by high winds; it is not yet ri :
or too ripe to cut, and, with a few dc
of dry weather and an energetic use
machinery and muscle. can be saved.
The London Economist of the 3d
July has the following in reference to®
crop prospects:
The last ten days have produced cf
siderable improvenient in the .appe'
mice of the wheat crops, so muctiso th
with the exception of the thin and we
soils, there is a reasonable expectati
of a good crop. The plant has increaC
in vigor and improved in color,
the ear, now generally making its
pearance, shall have a fair blooming s
son, we believe a reasonably good 34;
will be the result. This is What
hoped for when less hopeful. opinic
were very prevalent. There is - no at
of that weakness in the straw Which:
often causes the wheat to fall, and we
live that the cold weather of Jut
which gave rise to so much eppreh'
sion, may in fact have afforded strent
anctsolidity to the ,straw. Nor-can iv
doubted that the temperature of the
produced by the extreme heat and lc, _
continuance of dry weather of last an
mer, have had a material effect In a
taininglthe growing corn during the 1 1
ungenialspring. The growing oats, a
to some extent barely, have recel4.
equal benefit with the wheat from 1
improved weather.
