    ALLEGHENY CATTLE _ MARKET
OFFICE OF PlTTszrßoa GAZETTE,
ItieNDAT. Tilly 19,'1869.
• There was an increased supply of 'Cet
tle on sale today, compared 'with ' last
week, fully_7oo head, against 570, and
there was an.unnanelly large number of
these from adjoining comities. • The
number from the West was about the
. same as last week, but there was e n in
.
cieased number of State Cattle on sale.
1
Of the Cattle from the' West, 3 care were
-,
from Chicago; 2 from Cincinnati; 1 from
.Indianapelle; 1 from 'Mansfield; 2 from
Newark; 3 from Selena/ 1 from Caledonia
and • 1 from Bellair. In 'addition, we
have sales reported of 149 head from
.
Washingtop Co.; 36 from Butler and 24
from Greeii; .making in the aggregate,
209 heads of Pennsylvania Cattle, and
this is the largest number that has been
On sale on any one market day this
season.
The market was fairly -active, .and
there were but-very few. if any, left over
unsold, though, upon the whole, prices
were not as high as last week. Prime
fat steers sold readily at fall prices, but
there were but few of this - kind in mar
ket, the bulk of the offerings consisting
mainly of medium grass cattle, and not
the kind usually sought after by the
best butchers. As will be seen by refer
ence to th report of sales, some few No.

tion of the est cattle sold at 734@7X.
The only i quiry for ahjpment; that we

was looking after a car load of bulls, but
the, most of these animals had been
bought up before Peter made his appear.

The sqpply of.this class of stock on
sale to-day was remarkably light, only
700 headland these were mainly of the
commoner grades. The beat sheep and
lambs sold readi/y, and that,• too, at an
• advance over last week, and we have no
doubt many of the butchers had to go
home as they came, empty handed. It
is probable that good fat sheep, if there
had been any such in market, would
have brought 5, perhaps ,S, or 534 c. per

having been sold at these quotation%

-RI TE NEWS.'
As expented l both rivers are again
rising, and last evening there: as an
ex
cellent stage of water for running 'coal.
This has been a most remarkable sum
mer for rain and big rievera—we have
not had anything . like it for several
years. Here we are with the month of
August rapidly approaching yet not a
single:boat has been compelled to lie up
in consequence of low water, and even
boats heavily loaded have experienced
but little trouble therefrom. We are in
hopes, however, that the rain is over for
the present, at least, as the weather has
beConie much cooler; the mercury, in
the shade, stood at about 82@83 nearly
all day.
There has been no arrivals since the
data of our last reportwith the. excep.
tion of the regular '
packets; The Gig's
gow, from St. Paul, and R. O. Gray, from
St. Louisare among the boats due.
, The New ; State for Wheeling and the :
Petrolia 'for 'Parkersburg 'departed, as
usual.
The Lorena, Capt. Sam Shuman, is fil
ling up steadily, and will be the first
boat out for St. Louis and passengets
and shipperanhould blear this in mind.
The towboat, Ormsby will probably
get off to-day for Louisville with a tow
of coal, and the Hercules, it is eipected,
will be ready to follow on Wednesday.
The Messenger arrived, at St. Louis
from St. Paul on Friday, and was adver
tised to leave there for Pittsburgh on
Saturday. .
The Collossal has been laid up at St.
Louis, and Capt. Cox was to have left
there for Pittsburgh on Satuiday.
A. petition was in circulation at St.
Louis, hmt week,to have Mr: Benj. Craw
ford, re4nstatod as Superinvising In
spector of the Western District.
The Argosy and Glendale arrived at
Cincinnati on Saturday, and the R. C.
Gray left there the same day for Pitts- -
burgh, with about 3.50 tons.
The Lotus No. 3, Pittsburgh to New
Orleans, passed by Cincinnati on Satur
day,
The steamer Bertha and Deer j ,Lodge
are both laid up at Sioux City.
—Mr. Hartupee, engineer of the Great
Republic, brother of the well-known in
.ventor. feels confident that the Hartu
pee engine is a success, and in less than
ten years it will be generally used. Qne
thing is sure, at least, and that is these ,
engines drive the Republic up the river
with mirafinkius speed, and that, too,
with some nine hundred dollars worth
of fuel less each trip than any other boat
of the same capacity. Take her all in all
we consider the Republic a perfect sue.
cess, and were we. disposed to make
comparison the Republic wotild rank
very high.
The, Louisville Pilots' Association
have deciced to make some improve
ments, which will greatly decrease the
dangers of navigation between that city
and New Orleans. Among other things,
they will cause to be erected two or three
light-houses on the Grand Chain in the
Ohio and aboVe Cairo, one of the most
dangerous and uncertain channele in
either river. These lights are to be dis
tributed at proper Intervale, and kept
burning all the time at night for the pur
pose of illuminating the river that boats
may know how to steer. The pilots
have also determined to have boxes
tested at. Cairo, Memphis and Vicks
burg, to which all, the pilots of the
association will have keys, and they are
to be receptacles of communisations
tween them concerning the stage sof the
river., changes of the channels, tic.
