even to the moat careless observer.
Leavenworth has the appearance in, the
business portions of being a "finished
city." Its streets are graded, macadam
ized and sidowalked. Here you don't
meet young men rushing about the streets
with their boots outside" their trowsers;
and the ladies, bless their hearts, can get
out after the pretty things with ease and
• comfort. There is scarcely any building
• gortni; orkfaid the tracle,,w,hich is consid
erable, is conducted in a quiet, dignified
way, without noise or ostentation. You
feel that the city has got beyond her days
of youthful enthusiasm, anall
to enjoy the fruits of her past prOsperitY,\ l ,
and when you pass beyond "the strictly
business portion, you see : with how much
good sense and aste she is preparing for
thi s eu isaymelat,--, • • to. •l t eitclences,
churches and -aelitiop: Ingo which
-would adorn any .I•Mking up
on every hind. , On all sides you see the
evidence of wealth already acquired, ap.

any 7 ; , ' piond of its rich men.
Of Leavenworth are putting
their spare dollars •to good'use, and are
rapidly making their city) one of the most

"The need of the diffusion of more
practical Scientific information among all
class is clearly shown in the readiness
with which people .Wcome " victims to
some of the most absurd 'tricks end
schemes which the fertile brains of cun
ning men can invent. The most recent
of these tricks "surpasses 'in audacity all'
others which we have heard of. A patent
butter company have tiperied offices in
this and in other cities to show the people '
hots to make a pound of good butter out
of a pint of -milk, and , to sell them , rights
to rohke, and also a Mlle white powder,
which is the agent used to perform the
magic work. At the WWI of the com
piny they do not ask.the eager purchaser
to believe their statements; but they chtirn
the butter beforelds eyes. A pint of
• with half a pound of good. butter, is pat

the powder; the- whole is„warmed, and
then five minutes' churning brings out
one and a half ' _.pounds t of• good.
butter!-' Here, then,--"Is demonstration!
What can be more convincing? No
one suggests to the enterprising comPlOy
that nearly nine-tenths of 'the milk used
is water, and, if. they . perform what they
allege, they are hanging water Into but
ter. Tills would, indeW, be a- miracle
equal to that, of our Savior, Whochanged
water into wine. We• have been asked
many : times by intelligent gentlemen how
this thing can be explained. Very easily.
By the process, the whore of the pint of
milk (mostly composed of water) is
driven into, 'or blended With the half
pound of melted butter put into the churn.
There is no important inarease of real
butter in the.ohurn,,althoughrthe watery
mass, which looks like dnferior, butter,
weighs more. Pat the mass Into a dish,
.and beat andthe true butter will saps
late from the milk or water with Which it
is blended. • This is the method by which
butter and lard ark:greatly 'adulterated.
Nearly"eff the lard sold by, grocer); :con
'tains hum 25 to 40 "per.cent. of water.
The adulterators have not been able until
within -a year or two to „combine with
genuine lard more than 95 per cent. of
water; but recently, by the use of alka
line • carbonates partly • stiponifyigg the
lard they force into association more
than'4o per cent. :What a shameful fraud
this Is! And how hard it falls= upon poor
people, who mostly consume - the attenu

Mow to Read a Gal !Meter.
Frequent Aisputes arise on the presen.
tation of gas' hills, because °in many in
stances householders ire unable ' to read
their meters properly. --All persons can
ascertain the amount of gas burnea by
Iremembering the follokving:
The meters (both wet and dry) in ordi
nary use Will be found to have three In
dices, the hand on the first or right hand
index moves to the right as the fignfes
read, and each indei begins at a cipher
(0) at the top and reads, 1 to 2to 8 sad
so to the cipher again, which is 'lO.
When the hand on the right -index has
moved to 1 it indicates that 100 cubic feet
of
. gas has been used or passed the meter;
when it points to 5 it means 500 feet, and
after completing the , circuit at (0) it is
1000 feet.- Each of the indices are ten
fold multipliers of- the one preceding.
Single figures are used for want of room,
but- the multiplier is -generally placed
above the index; thus the right hand is
"one thousand," the next to the left or
middle index is "ten thousand," and the
last or left band index is "one hundred
thousand." Therefore, on the first or
light hand index, 1 on the dial stands for
100; in the middle index 1 stands for
1000; and 1 on the• left hand index stands
for 10,000, and so in this ratio with the
succeeding figures respectively.
To read the meter, begin with the left
index and write down the figure last
passed by.the pointer; then write down
the figures last passed oh the second in
ks, and proceed in like manner with the
third or tight band index. Now, we add
two ciphers (00) and it will give - the
amount of , gas registered in cubic feet.
Suppose the first index was 2, the- second
index 5. and the-third index. 6,: making
256; now add two ciphers, and you will
have 25,640 1 being the amount of gas used
at that time.
At the end of the month (or at any other
time) read the meter again '
and the fig
ures will-read—say 26,500 after adding
the ciphers; now deduct the first sum from
the last and you will have the differefies,
900, which indicates the-number If feet
used since the first reading. '
If your gas bills seem too high, 61 1 you
have the eyidebee oreitaping gas by sense
of smell, but rivt positively so; take a read
ing of the meter when no trarnera are in
use, and after an honk or so repeat ,the
reading, and lips is escaping it "will be
shoWn, when proper reniedies can be ap
plied to 'stop the leak.Phiea. Ledger.
