OFFICE OF PITTSBURGH GA.7..ETTRI '
TUESDAY, July 6, 1869.'
Contrary to all expectations the week
opened with bearish feeling' in stocks,
lo4 \ ands and gold. The markets all ciosed
strong and higher lon Saturday, and
fromthe fact that the Government
dish ursed unexpectedly about nearly
five vciflictis of currency hi payment
for bondkand for to•day ari easy money
market and a`general large advance, at
least in bonds arid stocks, was expected.
The market,',nowever, opened dull and
soon declined under a great money
pres Sure, and better quotations for bonds
in London. \ '
Gold opened at 137, became suddenly
dull and heavy, declined at once' to 136,
and after 3P. 11., went down to .135 t
with more sellers than buyers: \ .lt is
'now supposed that no gold will be ship
ped during this month, and some hol
ders of gold having become tired paying
from Xto ;4 per cent. per day 'for hav
ing their gold carried, have, to a great
extent, realized. A reaction in money
market 'Would; however, immediately
revisethe speculation for higher gold,
which may. set in at any moment.
Government bonds remain firm and
have only declined X per cent. from
their higher point.

The money market was very stringent
before three o'clock, and the rates for call
'loans advanced to 3-16@y 4 per cent. The
great bulk of the business, however, was
done before the rise, and most, brokers
did.not pay over 140 per cent, and inter
eat. Discount operations are c )mpletely
checked by the high rates for money on
call. It will be observed from the Sub-
Treasury Statement, elsewhere, that
there is a wide difference between the
balance of Saturday and to.day. This
discrepancy is due to the operation of
charging up interest. Sterling dull, but

Stocks have been weak and declining
all day. A great many bankers, who
hitherto abstained fromcharging the ex
treme rates current for money on the ,
street ( notified .their customers today
that-they must pay them or sell stocks.
The, latter, alternative seems tD - liaye been
taken to a great extent, and hence a largs
amount of long stock has come on the
market. The continued stringency in
money also disappoints many operators
on the bull side; they have voluntarily.
relieved 'themselves of their stocks to

but still 'unsettled, though the prices
