Contrary - to all exp e c tations the gold
..
market, which opened strong this morn
ing at 138%, declined again late in the
afternoon , to 137%, ron account; of the
scarcity of money; The banks are con
tracting, likewise, in a greater ratio the
continued gold sales of the Government,
whilst the purehases of bonds are only
one-half the amount of the gold sales.

Government bonds opened stronger
at an advance of 34 per cent, but in the
afternoon the advance was lost again on
account of the stringency in money..
Stocks are very shaky and even the
best of them have to yield to, the money
pressure. Fort Wayne, which was
bought up eagerly at 158@ , 159, in hope of
a large . stock dividend, sold down to 152
this afternoon,
and is very weak. The
short interest In this stock is almost en
tirely covered and no good can accrue to
the holders thereof when compelled to
submit to high rates of interest to carry
it, and keep larger margins. The stock
at par is just as good to them as at 150,
and 'a great deal cheaper to carry or
manipulate. i
In our home market money is 'easier,
but business remains stagnant.
