The gold Ixbarlfer, optined - weltk;' and

ket and 138 b was touched from a reac
tion to 1383 took place, closing very
steady. A large short uncovered inter
est outstanding - will prevent: any mate
rial' decline, l even if the Government
should sell more largely. So long as the
imports continue in the same propor
tion at so late a period of the season and:
exports are small, the prospects for a
speedy decline of gold are decidedly
poor; in fact, lower rates for gold at
present, when so much grain and flour
is going out of the country, are not very
'desirable.
Governments declined still:. further to
day under al better demand for money,
.lower rates for • gold, dullness in ex
change and liower quotations from Eu
rope.
Stocks look very panicky, but it is
likely only al yielding to the bear inter
ests, for the' purpose of creating a new
short interest. Cleveland anti Pitts
burgh declined to par and Fort Wayne
to 155%. I
The supply of money in the banks is
quite adequate to the demand, and good
paper will he accepted at from eight to
nine per cent.
Business IS exceedingly dull.
