" • A New-Drilling Maeßine The other day we published an item declaring that a machine had been in vented for boring oil wells in a new and inipOved manner. The Titw3ville Herald deseribes it thus: On the flats in Oil City there is in opera tion:a new machine for drilling oil wells, 'which obviates the use of the engine, waking beam, &c., andtheerdlneiry der lick. So far as we can determine It will answer the purpose quite as well as they do.'' The machine consists of a revolving circular platform, a derrick constructed of a pole and wiresupporta, two wheels which serve as a band and , bull •wheels,- antra pitman. The wheels,' derrick and pitman, and other- apparatus,' each as .reels and cables, are situated on the plat form, and the whole is turned by horse poster. The manner in whichlhe conductor is drivels and the drill operated is simple and ingenious. , The conductor is placed , . close to the pole, and driven by striking it with . % weight, on substantially the same principle as in the ordinary - method. The conductor being driven, the tools and temper screws are attached to a cable, which is run over a pally in the top of I the pole, and down the other side, where it is attached to a pitman which works in a slot, thus giving the tools two drops for every revolution of the slot. The drop is, of -course, independent, and conse quently much more, effective than a drop made by , the slew ; motion of..a walking beam. , The tools are turned with the machine, and no reamer is, or need be used. The tools are raised, the sand pumping and the pumping for testing the , well, airs done by the ald'of horse power. ' The 'average mimber of feet drilled per day by .the - machine, in limestone formation, was six, but in the softer for mation in the oil region it is expected that it will be mach greater.
