CATTLE.
There was a fair business during
Thursday and Friday of last week, the
sales in the aggregate on those days
having been large; since then,'however,
the market has been tame and dragging,
buyers and sellers having been unable
to get;together. The great propertion of
the arrivals thus fir this week have been
from Chicago, though they were several
droves from Cincinnati and St. Louis.
In regard to quality there is not much
difference compared with last week, the
bulk bt the stock consisting of good to
prime shipping steers. The advices
froaubtew York were not as favorable as
On lidionday, while telegrams from Chi- 1
cage eport a light run and an advance
Of frOm a quarter to three-eights, and
this, explains why buyers and sellers
wereunable to get together. 'Shippers
I t ' s
gene lly refused to buy at the asking
pric s contending that they'could not
dos without running azood chance of
loshig money, while sellers, in view of
the advices from the west, were unwill
ing. to make concessions.
AS will be seen by reference to the re
port of sales, there\ were one or two
droves of estra sol at 8, but shippers,
generally, alleged .that 7% was all they
could afford to pay fer the very best cat
' tie, and good to medium shipping steers
may be quoted at 7017%. _

—The Dubuque Heralsi, of the 21st,
says that tho Glasgow was run into Gale- \
tart last Wednesday, where she received
the largest height of any packet that
visited that city this season. Her agent
'here JaCk Haskell, performed a cute
piece of strategy to secure her trip. He
l i
had 1,000 sacks engaged here, but know
that the MilWankee was to run into
Fevre river for* load, headed her off by
hurrying the Glasgow to Galena and
leaving what freight he had contracted.
ThelMilwankee is the longest boat on
the river, and was nearly three hours in
trying to turn round in that narrow
stream. All this time the Glasgow was
receiving a short distance off, and se
cured the lion's share of shipments.
—The Dubuquo Times says that a
steamboat having twelve feet beam,
seventy.eight feet keel, and employing
over 6, of lumber in ita construc
tion, isbuilding below Bridgeport to run
on the Maquoketa. The boat has already
been launched and found to draw only
six inches of water. - -
