MONDAY. May 24, 1869.
The general markets present noth
ing that is really new-or imnortant. The
demand for all of the leading articles is
fair, although restricted mainly to sup
plying immediate wants, and there is a
fair volume of btisiness in fhe aggregate.
The stringenc.V in money matters has a .
tendency to retard business and restrlet
operations, but we are in hopes that this.
drawback will soon be removed and that
our banking institutions will shortly be•
able to furnish all the capital that is.
needed.

PETROLEUM MARKET.
OFFICE OF PITTSBUROII
' MONDAY S May-24, 1869.
The oil market was moderately active
lo -day there having been a fair volume
of business in the aggregate, while com
pared with Saturday pri l ces are a shade
lower, particularly for Crude. As noted
in oar last report, buyers - generally, es
pecially refiners, seem to ,hold off with
great tenacity, feeling very sanguine
that the bottom has not yet been touched,
and we are cognizant of some operators
who were anxious about buying a feir
days since, but -who now refuse to buy
even at the decline. Thereis no scarcity
of 'buyers, but with the events of the
past few days in view, they are not dis
posed to buy at prasent priceit, and
whenever IL has been ascertained that
the bottom has been about' reached
there will-be a brisk demand and a
large amount sold, and then, as is nearly,
always the case, there will be a reaction,
followed, possibly, by an advance.
CRUDE.
Compared with Saturday, Is fully a
quarter lower, and as • will be seen, one
