FINANCE AND TRADE, [By Telekraph te the Plttebarsch Gazette.) 1 1 NNW Yon x, May 22,1869. The ..ctivity and excitement in Wall street, which has prevailed with scarce ly an interruption since Monday,, was succeeded "by" a perfect calm in all departments this afternoon. There was an•entire absence of sensational or excit ing rumors, and the leading “bulls" and "bears" left . the Street at an early hour, after an exhaustive: struggle. The New York Central transfer books are now onen at the office of Duncan, Sherman & CO. The Fort Wayne and Pennsylvania Central Directors adjourned to-day with out concluding pending negotiations, but meet again next week to arrange de tails. The whole thing is regarded as really fixed. Money easier, with increased offerings. The early transactions were? on call, but at the close money was offered:at 6 per cent.; discounts dull. The Bank state ment is favorable; increase of $22,420 in deposits against an increase of $785,- 055 in loans, and $1,336,948 in legal ten ders. This may be explained by the fact that payments into the Treasury on account of gold were made in National notes, while disbursements on purchases of bonds were made in legal-tenders. The payments on account of interest were $1,526,253, and the receipts for cus toms were $1.927,000. Sterling is dull at Gold opened at 141 and fell to 14035, rose to 141 8 6 and fell to 141, and closed at 141,i@t41%, closing strong; carrying rates 8(4)4. The stock market (hiring the morning was excited and generally firmer. The Vanderbilt stocks were the chief interest upon rumors as to a basis of consolidation of the respective roads, and stock divi dends to be Made in connection there with. Hudson bought freely at 163@ 4434, and Harlem at 151 3 / 4 . Much ex citement in Fort Wayne under which prices advanced frbth 154 y, to 159 in the afternoon. OFFICE OF PITTSBURGH GAZETTE, ' SATURDAY, May 22,.. ymo. s REVIEW FOR THE WEEK There has been esmsiderable‘ excite ment in the oil market - daring the week which has just closed, and comfiared with laiit week prices of both. Crude and Refined are lower. The sales, however, fall below those of last week. Which may , be accounted for in the fact that buyer generally are holding off in expOt:iati n of Crttde going lower, and as a e I thing refiners are no t Ott disposed to sell refined until they have first bought the crude. While the indications point very forcibly to lower figures foicrude; it re sponds very slowly, and while refined, particularly for future deliveries°, has declined materially, crude has not dropped over three-quarters of. :8 cent during the week. It is but proper to re mark, however, that the .demand is very light, and the great proportion of the sales reported were purchases to cover short sales on settlements, and, as al ready intimated, refiners are holding off in anticipation of still further decline. Since the date of our last Weekly re wiew a number of refineries. Have ,re sumed operations and it is exPeatettliat the number will be still "further- in creased next week. The reduction in freights has infused new life and- waiAzul tion into the business, and aeon the whole the market presents athorehoPe ful and healihy appearance than it has for several months. As will be seen, the shipments east were much .larger than for any preceding week thiaome time, and it is probable that the'exports next week will be larger than during the one which has just closed. There are still some drawbacks in the way, but these will doubtless soon be obviated and there is no goOd reason to believe why Pittsburgh should not continue to be the great oil manufacturing centre of this country. Another noticeable and very important feature apparent, is a deter mination on- the part of 'both manufac turers and dealers to discountenance anything of a wild and speculative char acter, to adhere as closely as possible to a legitimate - business, to dis courage "selling short" and "buying long, , that is when it assumes the pro portions it did last winter, and to oper ate more in oil and less in paper con tracts. CRUDE .The Crude market is' quiet and'without important change, though, as already intimated, the tendency is downward.
