FINANCE AND TRADE,
OFFICE OF PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
THURSDAY, May 20, 1869.
The fluctuations in the gold market
were very violent and 144% was once
reached, declining again to 144%. The
tendency has so far been constantly up
ward, without any reaction, and it seems
probable that the operators will carry it
much higher. It is even generally be
lieved that a rate approximating 160
will be reached, and the present state of
the country's trade is favorable to such a
scheme. The true cause of the rise and
its main support is the immense ad
verse balance of trade against us and the
large amount of goods now in the bonded
warehouses, that hate to be paid for
yet in either bonds, So long as Europe
is willing to take them, or in coin, if no
produce can be shipped. ,
Government bonds were 'dull early
this morning and opened at a slight de
cline, lilt later In the day closed strong
and advanced to nearly the highest fig
ure of the day.
Stocks are strong and higher - sad a
regular bull campaign has set in again,
since money is easy and gold has ad
vanced.

PITTSBURGH MARKETS.
OFFICE OF PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
THURSDAY, May 29, 1869.
The general markets are rather dull
and devoid of any new or tmportint
features worthy of notice. The demand
.
for nearly all of the leadiph articles is
confined mainly to supplying immediate
wants, while in regard to values there
are no important changes. The unset-
tied and, we might say, panicky feeling
in regard to financial matters, is having
considerable to do with the dullness
which has prevailed for some days,•as
there seems to be a disposition mani
fested in commercial circles to do just as
liitie as possible, until money matters
become more settled.
