PETROLEUM MARKET.
OFFICE or Prrrsnuitas GArarrx,
Berm:way, May 15, 1869. S
REVLEW FOR THE 'WEEK.
There has been a largely increased vol
ume of business this week, the sales
having been unusually large, though it
•
is bat proper to remark that the great bulk
of the operations were settlements or par
chases to cover short sales. Refiners as
a general thing have done but little in
the way of new business, being inclined
to hold back for things to get into a bet
ter shape, and wait for the prices of
Crude and Refined to become more even
ly balanced. The most impOriant fea
ture we have to notice is a material re
duction in the 'cost of , transportation, on
the Pennsylvania Central, as well as the
Allegheny Valley Railroads, and with
this obstacle now removed,- there,is
good reason to hope that the dullniisa
and stagnation which have so long pre
veiled, will soon give way to that activ
ity and bouyancy which should charac
terize the market at this particular sea
son of the year. ' Pittsburgh' refiners
have now some show of competing suc
cessfully with other points, and of keeP
ing the business hare where it properly
belongs, and upon the whole the market
presents abetter appearance, than it hea
at any time this year, so far at least as
Pittsburgh is concerned.
Receipts of Crude this week. 9,216; last
week, 4,975; from Janary Ist to date,
242,471, against 450,962 same time last
year. Exports of Refined this week,
8,646; last week, 8,308; from January Ist
to date, 128,304; same time last year,
120,490. From the above it will be seen
that the receipts of Crude from January
Ist to ate, fall two hundred and eight
thorreandfour hundred and ninety barrels
below those of the same time last year!
Sales this week, 102,400 bbls against,
20,500 last Week.
CRUDE.
Crude continues rather weak with - a
strong - pressure to force lower prices,
but thus far the market has responded
very slowly. We can repeort sales of
1000 bbls for Jane, seller, at 14;1000 each
