The ,St. Paul Press, of Wednesday,
says: Business on the levee, yesterday
'morning, was brisk for awhile. The
Belle Vernon, from Pittsburgh, In com
mand of Capt. J. J. Darragh, and clerk,
Thoinas Darragh, was discharging a
heavy load of iron, glass and nails. She
was fourteen days making the trip from
Pittsburgh to St. Paul, and brought
round about 550 tuns of freight for the
upper river. Her offictirs report active
business at Pittsburgh- and Wheeling,
but very dull at Cincinnati and all other
points along the river.
The Belle Vernon left- for Pittsburgh.
She has engaged considerable flour at ,
Winona, and other freight at points be.
low.
The Dubuque Herald, of Tuesday,
says: The Tom Jasper Is a huge craft, in
length, breadtn and thickness, her tow
ering chimneys are higher than any
other boat's on the river, which makes
her the terror of all up river telegraph
operators. She 'has raked down the

—Captain Brown's new boat for the
New Orleans and Bayou Sara trade, now
being built at Stuart & Barmore's ship
yard, Jeffersonville, is to be called W. S.

—The Economist has gone on an ex
plering trip up the Arkansas as far as
Fort Gibson. She was heavily loaded
with Government and private freight.

Carter, of the Rubicon, informs it that he
will commence the publication of a
monthly paper about the first of next
month, which will be strictly devoted to

says: A dockhand on the Stella, named
John Humes, of Louisville, was . ornahed
to Oeath this morning between the pit
man and fantail. His body was placed
in 'a metallic coffin by the Captain of the
Stella and taken to Louisville.
- I —John S. Graham, an old •steamboat
dark, died at Madison, Ind., on Monday
evening. He bad beed up, town, walk
ing around and talking to his friends,
and seemed unusually well and cheer
ful. When on his way home to supper
he was seized withal paroxysm of cough
ing in front of H. F. Robin's furniture
store, and took hold of one of the posts
which support the awning, when a
seyere hemorrhage set in and he fell to
the pavement. Friends went to him's
sistance and carried him into the wire
roam, where he died in a few minutes.

Jeffersonville, have purchased the Mad
ison Ship-yard and Marine Railway and
appurtenances and machineig belonging
thereto, and will carry , on the business of
steamboat-building in all its branches,
under the firm of John R. Stuart at Co.
The new company have taken posses-
Won of the property, and are busy , in re
fitting and repairing the machinery for
active operations.. They have contracted
for building the hulls and cabins, of two
steamboats for the Red River trade, the
engines and machinery to 'be furnished
from Louisville shops.
