The gal market remains firm, with
an upward tendency. Although bonds
are quoted higher In - Ettrope and New
York, the shipments' of a few millions
of bonds are insufficient to -cover , the
deficiency in our experts, and during
the coming month we will be obliged to
ship coin _on a larger wale.: than hereto
fore. -Any attempt to lower the market
by short sales Is vigorously contested by.
those who have - bought gold at 139% to
139%, and by those anxious to cover
their short contracts, whicn are very
large. On the other hand the higher
rates for money
,in England will prevent
a rapid rise to par of any of our govern
ment bonds; and gold above 140 would
reduce the quotations in London.
There is a party now at work whose in
terest It is to run tip gold - for theTurpose
of dePresaing bonds, the-amount on the
market being insufficient to meet the re
quirements of the daily dealings, in con
sequence ,ot.which a : - large ahort inter
etlt is outstanding uncovered.
Government bonds were dull this
morning and opened at a decline of one
hilf per cent, but at the noon board the
market jumped suddenly, to the highest
figure yet realized.
Stookssdid not - decline much to-day,
as was anticipated; and closed strong.
Local stocks for bank shares of the old
issues are firmly held, but have to'be
sold at concessions, as it is the general
belief that smaller dividends will be de
dared for the next half year.
Columbia Oil, which sold at 24/4)22
fora few shares of Eastern holdersi; de
clared a dividend of two per cent. unex
pectedly, and • sells now at above 23 in
small lots, 25 being asked, at which a
limited quantity could be purchased.
The Triumph Company also report a
new - wed- •in . territory whiob was not
much :-thcinght of, but - Indic:Miens are
good and there is reason to believe that
this company will soon range among
the paying instittilions.
Mdney is more, esay.with banksi and
bankers,
but .a large -number of men of
means have lately made it a practice to
loan out their money at ,high rates, and
the tight money market so far has en
.couraged them . to.- such an extent that
they are not ; ashamed to ask far above
the-ttsual- high' one and a quarter per
cent. per month, asked as outside rates
by brokers: . :
