There was great excitement in the
gold morket to-day, and gold at one time
reached 138% r closing at 138, 1 4. It is
supposed that the advinee of the rate of
discount by the bank of 'England caused
by the heavy loss• of specie will neces
hate a farther rise in interest rates and
induce large return shipments of bonds
from Europe. The mere rumor of re
turn bond shipments to New York
would cause a heavy decline in bonds
and subeequent rise in gold. Under
these circumstances, it is probable that
gold would reach a figure far above
present prices, since we are largely in
debted to Europe on our.Amports, and
having also to redeem our bonds, the
country would soon be drained of gold,
unless a demand for our produce would
spring up and gradually neutralize thls
effect. Any material advance in at
present would be beneficial to our ex
port trade; the rate of exchange would
compensate for the difference in price.
It is somewhat remarkable that when
ever heavy disbursements of gold 'fer
interest take place, and government Is
also a seller for ol gold, that the rates of
the premium always advance. At the
present time It is the• Sixth repetition,
and goes to show that gold was all along
the cheapest commodity and has been
the pridcipal cause of the stagnation in
busines6. We aim at an early resump
tion of specie poyments, but can not
close our eyes to facts that are undenia
oble.

If the question is roised, why it was
that gold could go so low and remain at
that figure for a long period, we say:
that the condition of tne European and
general markets have been in the same
condition as our own; capital was with
drawn from industrial pursuits and used
in the more paying ventures on the
stock exchange, or even regular invest
ments of Government and other bonds.
The United States bonds being conaid
ered the cheapest, and in. consideration
of the resources of the country, the
safest investment, the large savings of
nearly all the middle class and small
capitalists was invested herein, and
consequently withdrawn from the money
centres; a collapse in the stock exchange
bubbles there would likewise have the
same effect here, but we are under sus
wouldn, end an over demand for gold
soon put it so high that it would
be throwing away all that was gained by
Eurepean capitalists by buying our
bonds at such very low prices, that , they
would be conapelled to desist from re
turning bonds in self protection and
await a more favorable' time until we
have recuperated from the exhaustion
of the costly rebellion. I

The eicitement in Wall 'Street contin
ued to the close of the day, and all the
markets were in a feverish and unsettled
condition. Private telegrams from Lon
don were'of a gloomy oharacter, and the
official announcement from Washington
that the sinking fund would not be put
in operation until alter June 30th had a
buoyant effect on money and a very de
pressive one on Governments. The stock
market was kept up by Albany tele
grams, but Vanderbilt stocks were
chiefly affeoted. -The balance of the list
was heavy at the °IOW. The day alto
getherhas been one of unusual excite
ment and groat fluctuations. Money
easy at 7 per cent., although the demand
was fairly active. National Bank notes
were very plenty, and offered tree of in
terest for three days on condition that
the amount be 'returned in greenbacks at
the .expiratioa of the time. Prime btu&
nem notes pass at from. 8 to 10 per cent.
Foreign exchange dull and weak owing
to the sharp rise•in gold; sales at 109 for
prime bankers for 130 days, and 109% for
sight, although the leading-firms are
generally asking higher rates.. Gold is
active, excited and higher, opened at
188%, and touched 139y 4 ,1ate in the after,
noon, closing at 138%. The Bulls were

The market continued irregular, in the
early part of the forenoori, Northwestern
declining % per cent. while New
York Central, Fort Wayne, Mich

Plttebtirgh were strong. Late in the day,
however, the market became very heavy
and there was a large decline throughout
the list. The leading "bulls" have been
heavy sellers all day, but the market
only felt this near the close.• The market
finally left off excited and with a down • 0

The oil market came very near being a
complete blank to-day, as there was but
a single sale reported. and it was of very
small cailbre. There was a good deal of
interest rnanifested, however, and, of
,
course, the main topic of discussion was
in regard to the production. While not
altogether tlatiafacpor x , it Is pretty gen-
orally believed that thereported increase
both
and a i swe intimated yesterdey, these re. '
ports have disappointed the hopes and
expectations of those who have been I
strong in the faith of a falling off instead
of an increase. On the other hand, it
has very agreebly surprised, .those who
have been hoping for lower prices, as
the inorease, is larger than the most•san- •
gain() bear expected, and with an ,in
creased production, the probability of a
decline is . generally conceded. As yet,
however, this Increase tias had but little
influence on the market, not as much as •
one might naturally, expect; refined ap
peared to be fully; as strong as it wasyes
terday, while Crude is but a fraction, if
any, lower. We heard a "bull" make
the remark, "that the "bears" were
afraid to sell "short" at present price"
Intimating that they were afraid te n bac s, k
up their assertions with their money. • i
As a chronicler of events in the oil busi
ness, we have nothing to offer in the ,1
premises, further than, according to
present indications, it looks as though
the "bears" were a little ahead.
CRUDE—As already intimated;there
was but a single sale reported, 500 bbla
early delivery, at 14y. This oil, we un
derstand,
was offered all around at 1434,
but nobody seemed to want it, and some ,
buyers seemed to have "123 i cents on
the brain" badly. It was also reported
that sonic of our 011 City neighbors were
inclined to sell; we thought from the '
way they have been talking recently,
that they had ignored Pittsburgh,: and
had turned faces in another direction.
It is possible however, that after all they
would just as soon sell to Pittsburgh as
to New York, provided they can do so to
better advantage.
REFINED—There Was not a single
sale reported, and while the market was
apparently quiet, prices, compared with
yesterday. are fully sustained. May,
first half, 32y 4 ; last half, 32y0 June, last
half, 33X ®333i; August and September,
35; and May to July, 33M. The advance
in gold, probably, had some influence
on Refined, though it has been steady
all week.
