ernment tomorrow, amounting to one
million dollars, if the bids are high
enough, had the effect - of depressing
quotations from the highest point, 134,
yesterday, but the lowest point touched
was 133 . 34, from which a sudden rise took
place to 133 X, closing at 1334. It is ex
pected I that a temporary decline will
take place immediately on the disburse
ments Of May first, but a lower rate than
,
132 is not looked for, and as soon as the
.
gold paid from the. Treasury is fairly
aistributed, a rise will inevitably take
place, even if the Government continues
to disburse and sell at the rate of one
millionldollars per day.
Government Bonds sold up to 1i63.
this afternoon, from which point the
market' receded to 133% for new bonds.
the difference between old and - new
bonds . is getting smaller every day
and soon new bonds will command the
same prices; there was a sharp rise in
10.40's which advanced to 1073.;; the
market;is strong, but the advance no
doubt will bring out sellers. • •
Stocks were sluggish early in the day
and gradually 'declined on money being
in bettor demand.
Money is easier.

PITTSBURGH MARKETS.
OFFICE OF PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
WEDNESDAY, April 2/3, 1869.
The general markets continue mod
erately
active, with a fair volume of bus
iness in aggregate, though businesi
generally is not what it should be at
this particular time. There is not so .
much complaint as to the amount of
business as there is in regard to mar-L
gins, which, under the influence of l an
active competition, are cut down to
about where they were previous to the
war. As we have repeatedly remarked,
our people must bring themselves down
to doing business in the old fashioned. -
way, and be satisfied With smaller
profits. This thing of making a fortune
every year, is, to use a common phrase,
about played out, and it is probably piet
as well that it is so. -
