C ATTLE -The; market •for cattle has
been unusually; bard during the past

4. ble advicea from;New York, which mar.
ket has . dropped! from a cent to a cent
aid a •half withih the past two weeks,
y**-. and' the great' Proportion of the cattle
Purchased here are bought for that
Place. The receipts have also been
larger than usual and with an increased
enpply and a diminished
.„
.demand; to
gether with the . break already.allnded
in the east, a decline was inevitable..
Furthermore, the ; change in tlie market
• has a tendency to" use those who have
been holding back to burr's their , "cattle
I * to market, as it' s not likely that there'
will be a reaction for the better, while
the chances are that the market will
strow worse, as within thenext six weeks
we may expect grass cattle to be on sale,
after which time, until. towards* fall,
•'; high prices are never expected, A. 3 al
ready intimated, prices have declined
•t, fully a half a cent within the week, and
prime to extra shipping steers may now

SHEEP:—The
market for t hi s class of
stock was also very dull, and as In the
case of Hogs and Cattle, prices are down.
The demand has, fallen off materially
which is evident fromithe fact that the
amounts were no larger than usual.
Some of the heavy shippers. who ordi

•car loads this week. Clipped Sheep may

HOGS.-.The Hog market has also
been dull panicky during the past
week,: and, compared with last week,
prima/have declined from x (:)1 cent
per pound, and even at the decline the
market is dull and weak, the demand
being very light. We now quote York
Hogs'at 834@9 cents, and Philadelphia
• Hogs at 93;®1014. The demand from
the east has fallen- off very materially,
which may be attributed partially at
:least to the change in the weather, as
people generally use less pork and
snore mutton and and beef daring the
Spring and Summer. The sales during

PETROLEUM MARKET.

• WEDNMWAY, April 03, 1869.
.
The market in a general way presents
but little that is new or importaut. The
dullness and stagnation which has so
long prevailed still continues, and as we
have repeatedly stated, there must be
radical change in some shape or other
before we can reasonably expect a real
and permanant lmprovenient. There is,
in the preeent aspect of affairs, a general
disinolltuttion towards doing anything,
for the very good reason that there is no
inducement offered, and 1 01 l men, Eke
others, are not inclined to go into a yen..
turd, wluch from the very outset , prom
ises no return. This is why the trade is
completely prostrated, and to this is at•
tributable the, fact that there is so Little
doing. It is to be - hoped, however, that
there will be a change, and that, too; be.
fore long, and that the depression which
has so long`prevailed will be obliged to
give way to•that t onyancy and activity,
with width the trade is usually charac
terized at tide season of tho year.
CRUDE—The crude. market continues
very dull and weak, and compared with
yesterday the prices are a shade lower.
