MORTGAGES.
Same day fifteen Mortgages were filed Of record.

The Titusville Herald contains the fol.
lowing late notes concerning the oil pro
clueing business:
The new well which was recently put
down on Sandy Creek, about seventeen
• miles from Oil City, as iPr test well, has
been pumped for about a week past with
out obtaining oil in paying quantities. It
produced a small quantity of very heavy
• oil. The sand rock in which the test was
made is reported to be sixty feet thick.
It is reported that the territory in the
vicinity of CH Creek Lake, on which seY-.
oral small wells were sunk in 1865, will be
• subject to a further teat daring the coin
nig summer.
Two new wells on the Mill farm in the
southern part of the Pleasantville dis
trict, struck about ten days ago, are now
producing, but the product of them is
not so large as that or other newsvells in
the vicinity, and they will probably not
yield over twenty-five or thirty barrels
per day, "each.
The plan on which the new black oil ter
.ritory Lielmden run, near Pithole;
is to be/eased to operators; Is about the
most sensible that has yet been adopted
in leisaintlhia kind of territory: It Is to
limit the number' wells to one owevery
• , Aveacrea, and to leave it to the discretion
otthe lessee whether he shall pu down
more thau one well on every ten t
acres.
if a plan like this this had been carried
out in the Pleasantville district, a mil
- lion of.dollars would have been saved to
the working interest and:. the • same
amount of oil that has been produced,
wyvould oventuidly, be obtaincell. The !sys
tem of leasing and selling one and two
acre - lotaiand putting' down wells on
them, has been a costly one to operators.
_A. new well has been struck on Sage
run, about two miles northeast of 011
City. It commenced Dumping onThurs
-day last, and produced from an to twen
ty barrels of amber colored oil in two or
three hotinf,,:but afterward' it - suddenly

happens without the loss of life,, but how
seldom is this the case. The ques

is to be the remedy in thie, matter.
So far as new refineries and storage
tanks are concerned, the remedy ia sim

their future erection within the city lim
its, and also any future extension of the
old establishments. We would have our
Councils prohibit the storage of these
dangerous oils in large quantities. We
do not deny, this may seem arbltrarY,
and may work hardships; but shall we
wait until squares of valuable property
are reduced to ashes, and scores .of hu
