pressed, - ia the following extract from
Mrs. Ames' Washington letter to the
Independent:
If I; were a man and could earn
honest living with my hands, I shoul d
certainly *do it, instead of, coming'
Washingtou'in search of an office. I'
, rather eat ; the bread of spontaneous toi
though amid by sweat of tirovi and
weariness ;of brain, than to grind it o
as a machine in the Government emplo ,
Yet I see many faces to sympathize wi
in these lobbies—honest eonntry f ace i
careworn;ldekly ones, who really 100
as if they had the right to whatever the '
may have 'come to ask for. Of course;
somebody his a right to the Government
patronage;',perhaps those who come after
. it have as good a right as anybody. But
it strikes me very oddly when I hear Con
grestaien ami their wives speaking, loftily
and *oaten: • . - may, of "office :seek
ers," as ;if '‘ , - - aging. to a totally-FM
ferent genus from themselves. My opin
ion is thaf.they 'are all Witte seekers to
gether' Vie, : difference being only in ' de
gree, tiqi tbe 'fatness of the prizes which
they seek after., I don't know, why it is
not R1;4401.010 and as modest for a man
to try to get a postoffice, a consulate or a
clerkship, as for a man to spend half his
fortune, and sell .his soul perhaps in the
bargain,: to' get to Congress.: Looking
down on. Ode laiurious tienate chamber;
on those . black-coated, high-oholtereel
gentlemen, spreading about Utterly at
ease, it la difficult to realize that they are,
la g e
not tolhe' elude born, that they 'did not'
glide into . Se cushioned chairs' by the
gracefhl roove of a natural birthright.,
But there is note man here who has not
worked hard, or hired other men to work
hard, for this legislative chair—how hard
many would not care to tell. , The heart
burnings, the jealousies, the hatm, the
lavished fortunes, the bartered honor
which bought some of these seats, their
occupants would not dare to have
known. There are men sitting here for
whom. , timussads of other men have
worked as for themselves to place them
where they are. Before their triumph
they did not feel at all demeaned to ask a
poor man to'vote for them; they deemed
no man too lowly to work for them; tht.y
themselves "'stumped," "canvassed,'
"electioneered," till they were hoarse
and ethic, Mid thought the 'office they
wanted well worth the trouble. But the
honor once won, it is easy to forget the
tug and the turmoil that brought it; so
easy to forget the poor man - in the shabby
coat who voted for you; -so easy to snub
the poor than in the ante-room who yen;
tures to stammer: "Sir, I worked for yen;
will you do - what you can ter mei" - so
grand to play the great Senator, by wav
ing stir hand majesticattY toward a'
guarded door, and exclaiming; in an awe
inspiring voice, "I have no time to at
tend to' Chamber."
My duties are in the -
Senate Chamber." All this is so
easy and mean. The Senate. is
the nation's
_guard of honor. If
I were a man I would not stop •short
of being a Senator myself; but, having
gained that high estate, I. hope that I
..
should have grace to .member that it
was the people quite as Du ch as myself
who had made me one, a n when I cock
plained to my wife that I was "almeit
bored to death by office seekers," I hope
she would reply, in a wife's most aggra
vating tones, "My dear, when you want
edran office, remember boor dreadfully
you bored other people." I have seen 1
some fearful taking on of airs of late on
the female aide of official life by women
in themselves ordinary to the verge of
stupidity, whom the people have elevated,
so many dead weights appended to their
husband's honors. It would be amusing
to see them avert their eyes and sniff
their noses at "office-seekers" and at
"common people," if their knew places
did not give them the power to wound
the feelings of strangers.
Washington Items.
On benator Boreman stating that Pres
ident Grant personally desired the con
firmation of Mr. Carlisle, and that if he
was not confirmed the Republican party
in West Virginia would go to pieties, the
Senate yielded their hustilitles to him,
notwithstanding he has been against the
Republican party for three years.
The latest humbug dispatch of the Cu
ban revolutionists in this city, is the story
that the President has sent a special agent
to Cuba to ascertain if the time has ar
rived for recognizing its independence.
The story Is false throughout. President
Grant's sympathies are with the Cubans,
but he has not thought of recognition or
intervention, and he has expressed a de-
oided opinion• that the present rovoln-
tionary movement will be a' ailure.
The Quaker Indian Agents and Snper
intendents occasion mach talk. They
are all excellent men, but it Is feared that
some of them will be humbugged by de
tigniarknaves, who always fatten upon
Indian appropriations. There is no din
ger of war so long as the.two million ap
propriationholds out, bui when that is,
pent, if the Quaker agen save us from
war they will . surpass thei, i predecessors.

The Hall Storm at St. Laub.
For twenty minutes, minutes which
seemed lengthened into hours, these mis
siles, varying in size from a quarter of
an inch to an inch and a quarter in diam
eter, fell as thickly as snow flakes; and
driven by the angry blast, struck with
the force of bullets.
They were of a jagged, irregular shape,
resembling that which molten lead as
sumes when thrown out to cool; the cen
ter being of a white, opaque substance
and covered with pure, transparent ice,
twisted by the fingers of the frost into a
thoneand fantastic forms. One of them
picked up on Oarondelet avenue weighed
two and a half ounces. Of the quantity,
some idea may be gained by a single inci
dent. Bailey it . . Co.'s Circus was per
'forming on the Lindell lot, and the pro
prietors, fearing that the tent might be
demolished, let down the center so that it
assumed the shape of a huge funnel.
When the storm was over no - less tban
fifty bushels of hall were remand! The
force with which it Came may be judged
from the fact that a negro on Third street
was knocked dawn by three of the
stones striking him onthe head at once.
Individuals unable to gain shelter were
severely wounded, and there are rumors
that one or two persons in the .northern
part of the city were killed • outright:—

A cortsrernar. in Keistaunee, Wiscon

beaten off by a
.family named Miller, in
the town of Casco, on thei 9th instant.
They were endeavoring to arrest the
Whet- for threatening to kill one of his
neighbors. During the fight the consta
ble received a buck-shot wound through
the nose, and a wound in_the hand from a
pitchfork; one assistants was badly cut on
the head with a pitchfork, and in the face
with a knife; another, while struggling on.
the gtonnd ith the old man, was struck
in the side several times with the poll of
an are; - a German had the tine of a pitch
fork run nearly through his arm, above
the elbow, while nearly the whole party,
were bitt e n and had , their clothes torn by
dogs. After the second repulse, the con
stable returned to Kewaunee and swore
out a civil warrant for the arrest of the
entire family, which was placed in the
hands of Sheriff Nadeau, who selected five
assistants, and started for Casco. As he
approached the house the family came out
to meet him, and surrenderedthemselves,
offering no resistance whatever. The of

most complete, and the quantity of iron
produced compact, smooth, exceedingly
tenacious, and xeadily mailable. So far
