HOLMES k SONS, pizzas oirPrizantruon GAZETTE, SATURDAY, April 24, 1869. The strong and upward tendency of _ gold at the , beginning ' of the past week, assist' ed by: the complications supposed • , to arise out of the Alabama question and the , insults offered by a Spanish war vessel to an American merchantman, was suddenly turned by the unexpected announcement by the Secretary of the . TreSaury to sell gold a week hence, by bide to bsreceived. It was at first sup posed that gold , would. be sold hiltinedi ately and in considetable amounts, and the decline in a single day wee from 134% down to 183%, from which the market , quickly.' advanced to 133 X, when it be- came known that the amount was un knOwn and the first sale only to take place on the 29th lust, one day before the regular gold interest disbursements of about thirty million dollars. Consid ering the enormous sales of gold which have taken place the past week and the .1 fluit that g.old loans command from 1-64 to 5.64 and ', per cent per day, it is evi dent that a large short interest was cre ated and that these operators calculate on mush lower quotations for the first part of the month of May. The rising tendency of exchaugli and the inactivity iri Government bonds would indicate; however, that coin shipments have to be Made to' Europe, if exchange is Juana cleat from remittances of bonds or ship ments of breadstuffe. j Government bonds were steady during all last week, but were a shade off from the highest quotation of the previous Week, with a moderate business; anota tions in Europe being slightly off, oper etor] for a rise were more cautions and Only the foreign bankers were steady buyers in order to keep quotations and be enabled to sell their former ship inents of bonds at an advance. InVestors of bonds are scarce at present prices and among business men fewcan be found that would not part with their bonds just as soon as there is a profitable employ- Mans for money in their proper business. The stock market is strong and has a decided upward tendency. Fort Wayne, selling on Friday at 13154, advanced 'Suddenly to 13554 on Saturday afternoon. New York Central is strong at 169 X, and all the Western roads are strong under the greater ease of the money market. On our home securities a rise on Co. lumbla Oil from 1654 e to 25e, the asking . ,price, has to be reported, in consequence of an increase of about 130 barrels of oil since the beginning of the ';year., City and county bonds and those issued for , the various improvements are in good demand; also some' favorite bank stock. Money continues still about 12 per cent. per annum for outside paper. while business is sluggish. Quotations as received by Ph. R. GENERAL REVIEW—The oil trade has blien remarkably dull during the past week the volume of business hav ing been exceedingly light, while prices have been unusually steady. The mar has bean and is still in that peculiar con dition, that there is really no chance for i business, and until tne obstacles which i ' are in the way have been remoyedithere is but little prospect for an- improve ment. What is most desired just now is a reduction in freights, so as to enable Pittsburgh to fairly compete;with _other points, and the sooner the Pennsylvania Railroad Company makes a reduction the better. In the present attitude of the trade Pittsburgh is completely hedged in, being unable to deliver oil at the . seaboard as cheap as other places, and i. there is no good or substantial rtasou, why this should be. There is no one in= terest, perhaps, that contribtitekinots to the treasury of this oorporatitin Ibap the oil trade, and it would certainly be noth ing more than au act of justice for it to place the trade here on an equal footing with other points. CRUDE—The Crude market was rather weak to-day with apparentlti it pretty ' strong pressure to sell, and ;com pared with yesterday, prices are a Wade lower, fully a quarter of a cent.
