The river was rising steadily last ev
ening, with ten feet' six inches in the
channel by the Monongahela marks.
Weather clear and pleasant.
The •Lorena- and Glasgow were due
laat night and will doubtless be found in
port this morning.
The. Australia departed for New Or
leans laSt 'evening with a fair trip, in
cluding quite -a number Of wagons,
carts, etc. Capt.' James Hamilton was
to uilot her to Cincinnati.
The high-headed Glendale, Capt. J. M.
Hare, with Capt. Jas. Mellon in the office.
will positively leave for St. Louis and
the Upper Mississippi to-day.
The R. C. Gray, Capt. Whittaker, is
filling up steadily for Cincinnati and
Louisville, and will take her departure
to-morrow evening.
The Bellevernon, Capt. J. J. • Darragh,
Jr. is announced for St., Louis and St.
Paul forthwith. She is, in. all • respects,
one of the best boats in the trade.
The Mary Davage and 'l3arges, Capt.
Shedden, are announced co leave for St.
Louis to-morrow, and shippers should
beak this in mind.
The Kenton, Capt. Kerr, is the regular
packet for Portsmouth to-day, leaving at

—The C,oombs, recently sold at Mar
shall's sale at Wheeling, has had a short
cabin put on and otherwise recon
structed, and will be used as a job tow
ing -boat.
—Mr. Jack Chambers, well known
here. owing to ill health, has quit the
office of the W. A. Caldwell, . and has
gone to the Hot. Springs, Arkansas, to
to recuperate, and'at the same time ace
as an agent of the` Arkansas River Packet
Company.
—The Great Repriblic, en route from
New Orleans has 2,000 Bars of railioad
iron and 500 eke of coffee for St. Louis.
—40.103 bales ofeetton has come out of
Red river from above the "raft" mince
the opening of navigation. There is
fully 1,000 more yet to come.
, —On Saturday afternoon the new
Wheeling and Parkersburg packet. Sci
ence was launched from the shipyard of
Wilson & Dunievy, Wheeling. As 'ithe
lies in the water. without her machinery,
but:with more than half her cabin on,
she draws only six. inches.
—There is a project on foot for the re
moval of the raft on Red River above -
Shreveport, which if it should prove sue
ceasful, will open to good navigation one
of the finest planting countries in the
world. :-.The Government at one time at
tenipted to remove the obstructions, but,
from some cause, • failed. The present
project is in the hands of those most in
terested—the planters of Upper Red
River—and will hardly fail.
—Captain Jo. McCullough has settled
with the insurance companies of Cincin
nati for the loss of the Judge Fletcher's
'machinery, at Louisville.
—The new boat being built for the Cin
cinnati Mail Company at Howard's ship
yard, Jeffersonville, will be ready to
launch in'about three weeks. She is to
be very light, fine and fist.
-Capt. Sam. Beltzhoover, river re
porter of the Republican, died last night,
in the 33d year of his age, of typhoid
fever. He had been sick for some time,
and his death'was not unexpected. He
was 'a young man of great energy and
considerable talent, and was kind
hearted, generous and brave to a fault.
Among river men he had hosts of
friends, and was indeed esteemed by all
