—The evening train from Bethlehem to
Philadelphia, on ; Saturday, ran over a

• —The Pais correspondent of the Lon
don Taegraple says that Gustave Dore
has painted a marvelous picture which he
calls "Titania." "The whole picture is
moving with fairies and falry, like life.
The very leaves of the trees are peopled
with little imps. Indeed, H.' Guitar,
Dore has contrived to put. so much in a

itself an exhibition." -
Philadelphia had a slight fire on Sun
day, at which, as tapal in the City of
Brotherly Love, the firemen got up a
riot. The Schuylkill, Fame and Colum

were more or less injured before the
,police succeeded in - making peace. As
.this occurred on : Spruce street near'
Twentieth, the very respectable inhabi

Tnn new English collearfor women is
increasing yearly. But it seems that a
large per centage of the girls who go in
for the senior local examination at Cam
bridge are rejected, on the basis of a test
originally planned for boys. And the
point or failure is worth marking. The
girls fall behind, not in Latin nor
Greek, nor Euclid, but for Incompetency
in such elementary subjects as 'grammar
and arithmetic, history and geography.
As year after year brings in girls to.the
senior examination from other schools,
this defective elementary training to more
and more apparent. This hint may well
be pondered among us. For while Amer
ican girls schools have been, generally;
more broad and solid in these foundation
matters than the ,English, there is of date
an increasing tendency to the more showy
and ornamental I."branches" at too early
an age.
A warrnrc in the London Spectator
propounds a new theory, in reference
to the well authenticated cases in bleb
persons at the \ moment of death have
made their presence seen or felt by—dis
tant friends. He suggests that the brain
has the power of 41roducing waves or vi
brations in an atthosphere peculiar to it
self, just as a magnetic battery sends an
undulation throngh the magnetic fluid
contained in a telegraph wire, or a bell
sets the air surronnding it in motion when
it is rung. At the moment of death. par
ticularly of death by some sudden vio
lence which finds the body in full vigor,
the brain, exerting itself with a spasmodic
intensity, causes those brains which are
connected with it by ..affinity to feel Its
power and thus to perceive the presence
of the person to whom it beloagN
