Oppicop I'l2 4 l43in:wen GAZETTE, - Tuasm', April 6,• 1869. 5 Money is still very scam and not to be had except at , high rates of interest. Nevertheless the gold, market advanced suddenly to lalX, but closed at 181% very Strong. The reports spread that the May interest would be anticipatedis a Canard, used for, speculative purposes. Tile Secretary of the . Treapury, elthough contemplating, it has not been •officially announced. Government bonds soddenly declined today about one-fourth per cent. for the old bonds, and seven-eighths• per cent. for the later issues. The market closed strong' and higher last night than da ring any time of the day, and bonds be ing higher in Europe, it was generally believed that a further rise would take place to-day. The still existing strin gency in the money market keeps deal ' ers'from buying, and even•bona flde in vestors are more desirous to have theli neirinvestments at a lower quotation. The main cause of the decline, however, la to be looked for in the selling out of the !foreign houses, who use their means in carrying stocks and care little to sub mit, to such enormous rates of interest as they were compelled to pay during the last few days. Stocks are very strong-and are manip ulated by cliques who have cheap money, while those stocks left alone are also firni held. E2l Local securities are heavy, but more inquired for at the" decline.
