FINANCE AND TRADE.
OFFICE OF PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
MONDAY, April 4, 1869.
The gold market opined strong at
131%, and closed steady at that figure.
The anticipation of May coupons had
but little effect, and few: are availing
themselves of the opportunity of having
their interest cashed.
Eal
GoVernment bonds opened strong and
advsnced about ;‘ per cent, when the
market suddenly broke and declined
about -11,4 per cent.; but closed strong at
the decline. Old bonds of 1862 have ad
vanced main to 119%, but old 1865's are
lower; having fluctuated between 116%
and 116%. 1868's are lower and neglected,
selling as low as 113%. after having 'sold
at 114. The whole Government market
is unsettled, and parties who calculated
to buy on the expected decline about the
first of the month, feel disappointed and
do not know how to act, The general
impression, however, is that bonds will
go higher, since the advance in for
eign 'exchange has enabled the bond
bankers to sell their bills with a profit,
and bhy bohas at a lower rate than two
week . i ago.
Stocks are strong and have advanced
through the entire list, with a general
disposition to hold for higher prices.
Money is easier but business is im
proving slowly.

Governments strong and higher, under
the prices from London and liberal pur

To influence the prices, a number of
swindle loans were called in and the
market hammered by offerings of cur

to the following quotations, owing to

LLEGRENY . CATTLE - MARKET.
°Pi7O3IOF PrrlSSlTlteff GAZETTE,
MONDAY, April 5, 1869.
There was a very fair supply of Cattle •
on sale to-day, 687 head, but with a good
•
local demand, the market was stronger
than last week, and, by ten o'clock, there,
were but very few unsold. It is proba
ble that prime Cattle were, no higher, but
common and medium stock sold at an
advance, and we have no hesitation in
saying that the average price of all the -
stock sold was higher than that of last
week. In regard to quality, the
~offeri
ngs were below that of the past two or
three weeks, though there were quite a
•number -of-good Cattle, and butchers
generally experienced no difficulty in
obtaining whatever kind they wanted.
Out of some forty ear loads on sale,
thirty seven came from Chicago, showing
that Chicago is our main point of supply;
this has been the case pretty much all
winter, and it is likely to continue so
until about the Ist of June, or until such
time as grass Cattle commence to make
their apperance. .
As wilkbe seen by reference to report
of sales, prices ranged from 7 1 y28 for
good butchers steak, and 8y,®8;4 for
prime do. Stock steers may be quoted
at 5®61.,. Fresh Cows dull; prices range

SHEEP—The supply of Sheep was
exceedingly small to-day, 186 head, and
there was hardly enough business done
to establish quotations. The roads are
in such a miserable condition that it is
next to impossible to drive them,
and this accounts for the very small sup-,
ply on sale to-day.
James Kerr sold 106 head from Alle
gheny county at 534@7%; - Moulton
Neely sold 50 bead from Mercer county
at an average of 5;4; Stakely dr. Bro. had
30 bead of scalawags on sale—up until 10
A. M. they had not been sold.
HOGS—The Hog market was rather
better to-day, that is, there was an im
proved demand; while as regards prices,
there is no change compared with last•
week. Quotations. in a retail way, may
bo fairly given at 11©l3, but very few
sales above 123.
Jacob Needy wholesaled 70 head to.

PETROLEUM MARKET.
OFFICE OF. PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
MONDAY, April 5, 1869.
The market was again exceedingly
quiet to-day, the sales being unusually
light while so far as prices are concerned
there is no material change, compared
with the closing quotations of Saturday.
The most important point - under consid
eration was in regard to the production.
Private telegrams from Titusville re-
ported that the_Eirercad made the daily
production for March nine thousand
and ninety-one barrels, an increase of
twenty-six barrels compared with Feb
ruary; this report created considerable
surprise, as it was generally expected
that instead of an increase there, would
be a decrease, variously estimated at
from two to•tive hundred barrels. There
are parties here, claiming to be well
posted, who allege that the daily produc
tion in tile Venango Oil regions is fully
ten thousand barrels, but we incline to
the belief that the Titusville Herald is
the best authority we have on this sub
ject; it makes no difference how it figures
-in this respect, there are always some
dissatisfied with the report, because it
comes in conflict with' their particular
interests, and is. calculated to -have an
influence on the market which is not, at
all agreeable to them. In regard 'to
stoats, we learn from the same source,
that there is an increase of forty-seven
thousand barrels, compared with Febru
ary. It is reported that there have been
several strikes within the last .few days,
and it Is expected that whenever the
weather sets in fine, there will be more
activity in development, and that work
on old wells will be re-commenced, and
that many new ones will be started.
OR.UDE---There was not a solitary op
eration in Crude to-day, and while the
market was remarkably quiet
,prices,
compared with Saturday, quiet
under
