Dead--The Picture Galleries. - • • tCorrespon deuce of the the Pittsburgh Gesettei3 Vign.NA, March 8, 1888: , , It is hard to know where to begin to describe this splendid city. From the moment you arrive in its superb - depot (for beauty of architecture, size and com pleteness of arrangement, far above ..any thing we have ever seen ) the., wonder grows. • • Dashing through the brilliantly lighted streets, so wide that there are double road ways for carriages, pedestrians and horse men, you eross by a bridge, handsomely adorned with statues, the. Danube canal, and enter theoid city: - Here the streets . are narr ow,' brit you iee the same flee buildings, ornamented .with statues and balconies. 4 1'ffe . shop ylndows are more brilliant than. In Pkris, the ladies' dresses for bright color and' "richness of material rival New' York, and . there Is the . same air of *try' rush , and 'excitement that catekeslrold of on this moment he enters Broadway: ' The coachnien dniO furl; ously, and in the noire* streets, some without eidewalks, : you • are, startled., by their peculiar, _, prolonged and, musical., cry, audit behooves yonto spring actively for the - fLost•doorway.: Their skirts' are clear if yen getrim over, - - for they have given warning. Ito not knOw-whether• they proseente•yen • if yon get run over here, as,they do in Paris. Why - do Americans so rave about Par. is, and Say 'nothing of Vienna? It is not so large, to be sure, but it is Paris itself; only more* so . More show, more dash and splendor' than we saw there,- and surely moiatilanty; it is a positive de light to walk the streets of a city, where every few_steps you meet a beautiful face,. odeliglitnet tasted before since niy last walk dOwn . Fifth avenue. The Preach women:dress exquisitely, but I really pity them thit they have such poor materials to work upon. , - One day we walked up and down "The * Prater,',!: the•Bons do Bologna of Vienna; there was the most:, splendid show, car riages without numer, with liveried ser vants, : coachmen in great .cocked hats, and horses with gay trappings of leather and brisk' ' The liVeries are , quite a few,. tare of Vienna, being much more showy than in, Perla The Empetor is fond of • fast driving, and often drives himself rap idly through the streets of the city, quite unattended by, guards., I saw him one 'rainy day, in a little c3upe, all glass in front, driving from within; six fleet but small roan horses -flew alongat a tearing 'trot,. 'While up and dartn.. bounced . two. bright • . yellow ' postil- . ions with cocked hats trimmed with silver lace. His Majesty's -rapid drivinii":thust have been more agreeable ..to him" han ,totheir surely-shaken bones. Behind the carriage was a small high seat in which sat a solemn and gorgeous foot man, in a bright ' yellow coat trimmed, also, with silver lace, with: folded arms; he seemed quite conscious of the exalted state of having an Emperor for coachman. The Ex-King of. Hanover, too, ,was *Anted - out to . me. - His c oachman and footman were lathe brightest black cocked hats and with great collar and toffs of fur trimming over almost to their wrist and elbows. Before the doors of the dwellings of the nobility yon see moat wonderful creatures, tall fellows with • cloth coats of all colors,.red, green, blue. and yellow, reaching to their heels, • lined and trimmed over •with -fur, cocked hats on their heads, and in their hands long staves , bound with silver, and ' with a great silver knob on top. I have never seen them do anything * or, say Anything, and for what reason . they con • sent to make a free monkey show of themselves I cannot tell. _ To return to the Prater, many of the la diesa left their canitigesand walked up and down t ; chatting - with ' acquaintances. Their dresies Were magnificent, velvet and satin,- of course, and just behind them walked tall and solemn footmen carrying shawls, stopped when they stopped, mov ing when they moved, being kept as by some invisible machinery just so far be hind them. Over • the broad green lawn near at hand dashed many horsemen, and though the carriage horses are not as fine as we see at home; the riding horses are liner. But to my eyes. used to the easy and graceful riding of our countrymen, the universal and awkward English fdsh-r ion of rising in the stirrup, with the body leaning "far forward, was exceedingly ugly, and gave an ides of pairirathef than pleasure in the performance. • Onetromes continually and unexpected ly across statues, fountains and monu ments: At every turn and from almost every part of the city the lovely spire of St. Stephen's Cathedral rises high over the roofs. - That spire is famous for its gradual elope from base to summit of 430 feet, and is . indeed a most exquisite and noble . work. The interior, with its . lofty r6of, borne aloft by eighteen great pillars, each crusted thickly with niches filled with statues, is very beautiful.; It . is dark With the soft color of age; paint ings, wood carvings and stone are all toned down to a colt deep color that is verybeautiful, while the windows of the deep ehened, with . .its fluted roof, are filled with old glass • of very rich and brilliant hue, giving exquisite _ toadies of ' Aloft and vivid color. The whole interior- is being restored and cleaned, bringing hack the light Original straw , color ;gibe 'stone, and a think • the artiste! effect will be greatly impaired. He had a pleasant kind face, gray hair and a clear, Vue eye, and greatly to our delight spoke' pure German. We went down a long !light of steps, our guide having ligi•ted a lamp, We, dutifully went through dark cell after cell, containing the bones of Emperors so long deed one could , not feel much in terest. But at length we came to a well lighted vaulted room, with frescoed walls, and there in the midst was the great Sarceplaw:is of Maiia Theresa and her baloved husband Franz I. They lie side by side; in the same tomb, it is of metal —the guide said bronze, but it looked mach morelike lead or. iron; profusely ornamented with medallions in relief, and full length. sitting figures at each cor ner. Maria Theresa and her husband are ieclining upon the top, not at full length, but half sitting, leaning on one elbow, looking 'in each other's faces as if easily conversing. A small, flying figure of a child• holds over their: heads a starry crown. ~/Icross the foot of this splendid tomb lies the unfortunate and unhappy Joseph 11, in a sarcophagus of extreme simplicity, perfectly plain, but for a large, slightly-ralsed cross, and a small marble tablet, bearing his name. He lies alone, away from his equally unhappy wiver, who have splendid tombs by oach 'other on the other• side of the chain. • Isabella; his first wife„ lies there, with her two cldldren who died in infancy be. side bet, and Josetihine, his second wife, near Isabejla. She had no children. The monk touched - Isabella's tomb 'and said, ",Toseph loved.helbut she loved not him; Josephine loved him, but he 'loved' her not," He paused and added, "That is what we monks believe." One could not but remember Miss Muhlbach's tra• gic story of, his life, and however poor 'a history it may be, I felt indebted to it for the reality of my impressions of many ; of the dead whale there. 'There lay also Napoleon's second wife and his son, nothing 'left of that great ambitious dream but a heap of dust! Pointing to a tomb standing alone, and covered with wreaths of immertellea, scar& and ribbons, our guide said, "There lies Va-Yiraliliau Emperor of Mexico." It made my heart:beat faster...lo stand so near to one so unfortunate; a •man whose sad story would be told in history, and who was yet a man of our own times. A silver wreath lay at the foot, sent from Mexico, and a large one at 'the head sent by his peor wife. The ladies of the court had covered it with wreaths, and I was glad- that heTested with his ancestors among thoie who loved him!. Onr kindly guide seemed quite moved as he spoke of him, but either to hide or recover from his emotion he hastily blew his nose and offered his snuffbox to a lady accompanying us,_whci graciously accepted the courtesy! She hag' evident ly! an excellent friend of the little old man and he helped her up the - stairs as . galli;ntly as a mans& the world. I have left butlittle space to speak of the great.picture galleries, and none stall to describe the many. great pictures, so beautiful they tempt me constantly to to rush oft in rhapsodies, but the arrange ments here are so different from Dresden. or indeed any other city I have yet seen, that I must say something about them. The Belvidere is a palace belonging to the. Emperor, with handsome grounds about it, lilted entirely, through- three. stories, with pictures; freely exhibited to the public two days in the week. Here, for the first time, have I seen the Vene tian school in its glory, and at last under stand why Titian, Tintoretto and Paul Veronese have names known over all the Tim other great galleries belong to ndblemeni and are also free to the pub ' lic on certain days. One of them is a col lection of Archduke Albert's, consisting of drawings and sketches- i there are one hundred and fifty of R aphael's, among them his original dra*ing for his great : picture, of the Transfiguration; as many more by Albert Darer and Rubens, and many more equally curious and beautifill. You enter a 'warm, light room, a gentle manly man comes forward, learns what you want, gives you a seat at a table, and a servant in neat livery bringeyon the great cases, looking like books, remov ing one as soon as looked over, and re placing it with another. Prince " Litchbinstein's gallery contains over 1,200 pictures, occupying a splendid two-story building. A polite servant in livery attends you, ready to give you In-. formation, but never obtrusive. No fee is charged, though you of course give some small sum to the man .who has pa tiently waited upon you for an hour or more. One feels like a guest rather than a stranger. 'This gallery has more first class pictufes in proportion to the com mon-place ones than any rhave yet seen. Indeed, Vienna is so rich in works of art that a week or ten days , is absolutely-ne cessary to examine them, and nowhere can one spend his time more charmingly.
