Ornos op. Pirrssuacra GAZETTE,
SATtatrisr, April* 8, 1869. 6
The extreme stringency in the Money
market on Friday morning was followed
late in the day by a. comparative ease.
Bonds and stocks, which' had declined
early in the day from one-half to two
per cent., suddenly advanced, and gold;
which had
.sold at 182 at the opening of
the market, suddenly declined to 131%,
on the rumor that the Stay interest was
to be anticipated by a rebate of six per
cent. interest. The ease in money in
.
creasedon Saturday afternoon, although
X . per cent gold interest was still paid,
and the desire to buv for a rise exceeded
anything seen on Wall street for a long
time. Five-Twenty bonds advanced one
per cent. from the lowest point, with
offers to buy for future delivery, and• to.:•
day's likely to witness a further sharp
rise, followed by a sudden decline, from
a I desire to realize immediately and on
short terms. There is no doubt that ev
ery effort will be made to advance. (ov
ernment bonds to a point a least a half a
cent above the highest point offered two
weeks ago. The amount of bonds held
andbought Iby foreign bankers of new
1865's and 1867's is very large, but the
advance of the rate of interest advanced
by the Bank of England' from three to
four per cent. will be an obstacle in
shipping bonds, and what was bought a
fiw weeks since at high rates will be
sold again, and thus the high prices can
not be long sustained.
The gold market exhibits remarkable
firmness after the official •publication of
the Secretary of the Treasury that gold
interest' would be anticipated. ' There is
evidently no auth about the shipments
of coin from )Inrope, at least the amounts
can not be very large or gold would de
cline more rapidly.
In stock the bonyancy exceeds any
thing witnessed for a long time, and
parties who bold stocks are very moil
dent of carrying 'prices far above pres
ent, quotations,
_ . althoughmoney must
remain- high ler' some time to come.
The only exception is the LTpion Pacific
Railroad bonds' and the American - and
Merchants' Union Express Companies'
shares, which declined.
' In the mining 'share market greater
activity is exhibited and Quartz hill,
which sold down to 03 cents, suddenly ad
vanced to 125 per Aare.
The completion of the Pacific Railroads
will soon revive dealing in mining , s hares
kicrivilKooltance the ,' value of property
hilliest° almost worthless, froth the
enormous expensea attending the opera
tions of the mines.

OFITOE OF PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
SATURDAY, ApTil 8, 1869.
GENERAL REVIEW--Thisdav week
the oil market was dull and weak, and -1
nearly everybody In the trade, expected, ' l d
under the influence of the unfavorable
advices front the east together with a big 4
river and anticipated heavy arrivals of ,
Crude, that a break was at haiid; and
.
that we were on the eve of a material de- ?
cline. And this wee% opened with that, ,
~
feeling generally entertained, and even
those who did not want to seelower
prices, acknowledged that it loiiked a
little dubious, and that the chances
leaned that way. Since then, however,
a stronger has sprung up, and to-day the i
market was very firm with but few sel
lers even at an advance : 'and compared I
with last Saturday, Cr ude is 'a half to
three quarters of a cent higher, and Re:
fined forsome deliveries, has advanced a
fall cent. There are • merlons causes
assigned for the very sudden and ones- I
pected change that has taken place du- 1
ring the week, none of which, however,
are definite or satisfactory, and nearly • ,
all are conflicting. It is claimed by some 1
that the production is falling off, and
that, unless there is an increase, the sup
ply
will not be adequate for the demand; •
and it is also asserted that exporters
have commenced to buy spot oll—there
was a report the other day, of some 20,.
000 bids having been taken for..that pur- I
pose. It is not to be concealed, however, ''
that stocks both in Philadelphia and
New Yorkhave accummulated, but this
appears to have had but little effect, as
an advance has been established with
this fully understood.
CRUDE—The market although firm •
was exceedingly quiet to-day, not a sin
gle sale being reported, while compared
with yesterday, sellers : demanded an ad- ,
oance of fkom.a quarter to a half a oent.
