B PITTSBURGH RIARKETS. Os•tifon or Prrrasonew GAtzaTTE, FRIDAY, April 2, 1869. The markets in a general way continue . very oull, but business men still console thenuielves with the hope that an im , Prevenient is near at hand. It is to be . hoped that business generally will' be better this year than it was last, which , was one of the :worst we have experi. enced since the commencement of the • late rebelliea. • There were .; very few business men who made anything; some managed to clear expenses, while quite a number wore forced to the wall • and - that, too, pretty badly.; There was an • unusually large number of failures in Pittsburgh ddring ' 1868; nearly all of which can be .48,eed_ to , overtrading, • and we think„ that. with the experience of the past year in view, there ; willbe • fewer of them in 1869. The sooner peo ple become reconciled to do business in • n-legitimattrway, stop - tills overtrading • andi* xuatistled with-old-fashioned mar ;gins, the better it will be-for the country at -APPLEAe S te a d yng in more freely, • but with demand, prices are Maintainecl, rranging, from ' sloll6 per bbl. The river was about stationary last evening, , with fifteen feet in the channel by the Monongahela' marks. The weather' hits turned somewhat colder with`every appearance of snow. There has been no arrivals or depar tun* since the date of our last report aside from the packets. The Wauanda from New Orleatia, Mgggie Hays from . St. Louis, and Robert Burns from Cin cinnati, are among the first boats due. Business still holds out pretty well, taking every thing into consideration, and the shipments by river, during the winter and spring have been large, though freights have been carried so cheap that our , steamboats have made but very littlemoney. It is bad enough to have to compete with railroads but when they get to cutting among them selves, as has been the case, unfortu natlyvit is still worse. Capt. E, B. Trinidad, we understand, previous to his departure for New dr-, leans, contracted for a small boat 'to be usectia towing for some salt company with - which he is connected, in Lontsana. Capt. Dowty.'who was here at the seine time with Capt Trinidad, prospecting, has gone to Louisville for the same purpose. Capt. Dowty contempiatles building a boat for the Red River trade. A Cincinnati exchange, reported the other day that Capt. Asa Shepard, late of the Armenia, destoyed by fire at St. Louis, had been interested in twelve boats, that had been destroyed in one way or other and pronoanced him an unlucky man.. Capt. Shepard is an old steamboatman, and has been interested in quite a number of boats, only two of which, the Winchester and Armenia, were destroyed. There are no doubt plenty of ste.amboatmen, who have been interested in half a dozen boats that have been nr.fortunate, without being consid ered unlucky, and we..cannot see the point in coupling Capt. Shepard iu this connection. The Kenton arrived from Portsmouth Thursday night, and departed again last evening. Mr. Gebhart, bar keeper, on the ill fated Armenia, arrived home yesterday. He reports having left Capt. Hamilton and Clerk Shepard at St. Louis. It is said that the Pittsburgh isurance companies lose fully $80,00 . 41 by the St. Louis conflagration, and some reports put it even higher. =The' Argonaut No. 2, left ,Little Rock for Ft. Smith on Friday last. —Capt. Z.T. Stookdale's new' steamer Australia, is announced for New Orleans. —The Biaggi Hays, with 750 tons on boat and barge, left Cincinnati for Pitts burgh en Wednesday. The Grey Eagle, Capt. C. L. Brennan, lathe regular paoket for Parkersburg to day, leaving at noon. —The Robt. Burns, in command of Capt. Frank Marratta, left Cincinnati for Pittsburghon Wednesday. —The New York arrived at Nashville on Wednesday, the. Glebdale at Cairo; and towboat Alps at New Orleans. —Capt. Lew, Vandergrift, the wharf boat proprietor at Mt. Vernon, was mar; ried on p last Wednesday, the 24th Inst., to a lady of New Harmony. • ; —The Kate Putnam, Capt:G. W. Reed; is filling up steadily for Nashville and will be the first boat out for that point: She is in good condition for business. —The Collossal, Capt. M.' A. Cok, announced for St. Louis sub Fort Benton forthwith, as is also the NlckiWall, Coot, Tom Poe. These are both bran r,b3w boats. —The new Northern Line packet, NUM neapotis. Capt. T. B. RhodeS. is almost completed, and will commence busines4 next week. She is a real beauty and no mistake. 4 . —The St. Louis 'Democrat, thinks' thei rates recently adopted by the lgortherri Line and Northwestern Union Packet Companies are so high that all grain shipped from.the above rapids will go through Chicag.). —The Thompson Dean, which left St, Louis Saturday for New Orleans, had on board the materials and carpenters to build a fall length , cabin of elegant de sign and commodious appointments. The cabin will be ready for use on the neat trip but one. —Larry Harmstad has sold his "star" wharf-boat at Memphis to parties who have taken it to Helena. The . Appeal, noticing its departure, wishes it a safe voyage, and expresses the hope never again to see a private wharf-boat at Memphis, and it is about right. —The officers of the Northern Line for the present season are as follows; Presi dent, • Capt. James Ward; Secretary, Capt. Thos. IL Griffith; ' Superintendent, - Capt. T. J. Binford; General Agent, Capt. Isaac M. Mason; 'Maj. W. N. Starke, late freight agent of . the N. W. U. Co., will assume the same position on the North ern Line under the compromise arrange. ment. —The St. Louis Democrat, of Sunday, lays: Captain Joab Lawrence arrived in this city yesterday. .11e seems, uncon cerned about the transportation contract. His ideas on the snbjeat which has agi tated so many, he keeps to himself. Hiram K. Hasiett and W. Kountrare also reticent, perhaps because they have no intonation on the subject that is not already known to every btody. John N. Bolinger quietly reclines on his easy, chair in the universal , fast freight line. exchanging jokes with the burly H. H. Symmes, and appears quite unaffected by anything that has recently occurred. 'More we could say, but it may be_enough to reiterate, that an im mense amen,nt of private freight; and an immense artiohntof Governinent freight, will be shipped this year to the Upper Missouri River, at fair rates too, we are confident.
