their predecesso r s. We commence with ,
Harper's Magazine. As usual the num

formation as well as entertainment are
embodied in the papers entitled "The
Freaks of Vghtning," "An Artist in.
Alaska," and "The Great South Earth
quakes of 1868," "The Secretary with a'
Secret," and "My Chum's Story," are,
stories of merit; and , will repay reading.;
The ' Editor's Easy Chair and Editor's
Drawer are chuck full of spicy things.
The thoughtful will appreciate the
Record of Current Events. The pub
.
Ushers announce the commencement of a
new mid in the ritay- , number by Miss
.
Muloch, to be called "A Brave Lady."- t
.
The Atlantis opens with additional'
chapters of "An • Oldport Romance." ,
The articles of this numb* are certainly
more practical than in some numbers of .
.
,this dignified monthly, and Are timely,
- too. The solid papers are admirably re
lieved by Such piquant and well-told
stories as " The Foe in the . Household, "
and "Boomer) Acquaintance. Interest
should be felt by us in these parts for the
graphic sketch of the "Carpet -Bagger in
1 Pennsylvania," and at the vanity illus.
trated.in the. picture of the North-West.
Much attention being drawn to the Pacific
Railroad, the article of Mr. Bowles will
be enjoyed. The article'entitled "A Ride
with a Mad Horse in a Freight Car" is
rich and racy. The', usual good taste is
displayed in the literary notices.
Lt:ppinoott's Magazene grows better and
better. The April number is capital, and
full of interesting papers. , Variety in
the articles is an excellent feature of this
issue, substantial and practical topics
sandwiched with spicy stories., - Few can
read "Hans Breitmann in Politics" with
one detecting the poetic poirer of _Mr.,
Leland. The old but popular theme
"Women,'' is treated in fine style, and is
quite rea dable. , "Sam's Sermon" will
Ind plenty of 'admirers,. The other pa-•
pers and dainty Poems 'willliear reading.
The department entithid " "Our Monthly:
Gossip' is admirably _ conducted. The
typography is very fine and challengee
admiration. - - •
The Gakcy, notwithstanding so' much
space .is occupied with serial stories, is
varied and full of interest..:, Reade's
novel . , "Put 'Yourself in ida.Place," is ,
growing in interest, and is - widely read.
"Cypher" is concluded, which is supple
mental, • and gives the number a bulky
size. Articles of seat practical. value;
and by eminent writers, are found in this
imbiber. Prof. Draper's article, "AM
nial'Foed," is of this type. Much may
be learne d InJustin McCarthy's "Exile
World In London." It is hardly news-
Saly to call attention to "To or
Not to Marry-,'" u few are' not i nterested.
The short stories are well told. Few will
overlook "Nebulai," by. the Editor. - It is
surprising how this monthly bas risen in
favor since the present ' publishers took
) 2 04, of it •
' Po of
at Home for April is !softly to
occupy home hours for its substantial
features, as well as high toned matter.
Live questions are discussed with marked
ability, such as "Prison Didelpline,"
"Punishmemt; its meaning and ground."
Sterling articles like "Books and Read
ing," "Spiritual Problems," are of in
trinsic - value to the thoughtful. The
sketch of Bismarck, the friend of this
country, IS well well drawn. Many *fill en
joy 'Syrian Rambles" and "Sevas
topeL" ,- The serials—"Motheriess Girls,"
and "Christopher Krog," are stories of
merit, the, former by the anther of "Mary .
Powell." The excellent moral tone of
this monthly is commendable.
Of Our Young Folks' we have 'Token
with extravagant praise, simply because
it is worthy of it. The April number is
up to the standard, indeed excels in some
respects. The publishers are lavishing in
expenditures. which will in the end
_pay.
-The letters of William Henry, by Mrs.
Diaz, and Mr. Aldrich's "Story of a Bad
Boy! increases in interest. Mrs. Ars
siz'spaper, "The World we Live On, is
of the right ring for young folks. - But
the same-may 'he said ref - "Wrecks and
Wreckera, "Gardening for Girls," and
other articles.- 'We are promised some
rich thingafor May. "A..Boy'&Visit to '
the Coal Mines of .Pennsylvania" ought
to be popular with our young people_ out
here. Don't forget to read carefully the
installment of Mr.' Aldrich's "Story of a
Bad,Boy"iii flit number, d'ye hear boys
and girls. The offer to send free four
