FINANCE AND TRADE,
OFFICE OFPITTSBURGH GAZETTE, /
Wsingssi \ uv, March 17, 1869.
Gold to-day was from 131 M to 131%,
with little disposition to sell. It is sup
posed that the largeshipments of bonds
to Europe will raise the rate of interest
in London by the Bank'of England to 4
per cent, and prevent shipments of coin
from Europe and drawing specie from this
country. If this is resortedto, a sharp
advance in gold may be looked \ for, and
a heavy decline in bonds here; even re
turn shipments of bonds are likely to
take place.
Bonds were dull / and lower to-day, the
decline averaging about one haf per cent.
The old bonds are now neglected, the
supply on the market being so small
that orders can not be filled, and' the
speculative orders are executed in new
bonds, especially in 1867 consols, which
have also been used for shipment to
Europe.
Railroad shares were weak, and if it
was not for the short interest created yes
terday, and on. Monday, the market
would yield much more. Fort Wayne,
old Southern and the Northwestern
shares are the only strong stock now
dealt in, and mainly on their own merits;
their earnings are rapidly increasing.
In local stocks we have but a dull mar
ket, except for, an occasional sale of
either Exchange Bank, Citizens or Me
chanics Bank stook. Columbia oil sold
last night at 20 against 2434 a few days
ago.price. Allegheny county finds 634 a goad

LIVE • STOCK MARKETS
PENN'A CENTRAL STOCK YARDS,
WEDNESDAY, March 17, 1869.
CATTLE—The market thus far this
week has been a little more active, the
sales being larger ih the aggregate than
usual, though compared with last week,
Prices are a shade lower. The demand
seems to be mainly for New York, the
number taken for Philadelphia being
comparatively insignificant, and it would
appear that the latter market is now be.
ing Supplied from Baltimore and Lan]
caster, Chester and other counties in the
*astern part of the State. It is thought
that from this time forward there will
be more buyers than formerly from New
York, audit' this should prove correct,
we expect to see the Cattle trade largely
increased at these yards. As will be
seen by reference to report of sales, good .
shipping steers sold at 7%7%, and ex

SHEEP—The Sheep market, under
the influence of increased arrivals, was
a little dullish to-day and prices were
reported off from a quarter to half •a

we are cognizant of one drove of fancy
having been fold at 8;./. For common to
prime shipping Sheep quotations may

takes something very fine to bring the
outside figures above qnoted.

OpPlos op .Pmrsaultort GAZETTE,
WEDNESDAY, March 17, 1869.
The market was decidedly panicky
today, and while there •NM but little
done the feeling was very "bearish,"
and, compared with yesterday, prices
have sti4 farther declined. For March
delivery, last`halt, there was a decline
in Refined of a fall cent during the day,
and the later months are also off but
not so badly, and those who sold "short"
are now covering and that, too, at a very
handsome profit. Notwithstanding the
decline to-day, the question still comes
up, is it likely to go lower? and this is
the moat important, point connected with
the business - at the present time. There
are many, including shorts and specula
tors, who are desirous of buying, but
who do not desire to pitch In while there
is a prospect of a still further decline,
and hence, while the market remains - in
its present condition, weak and droop
ing, we do not expeet to see much biiii
ness
