Vjg litintrO Gairttt,
FINANCE AND TRADE
. OFFICE OF PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
TUESDAY, March 16, 1869.
The immense imports over exports of
seven million dollars gold for the past
week gave a stronger tone to, the gold
market, which ranged to-day from 13134
to 13IN, against 13074, and 131% of yes
terday. Shipments of bonds are also
unprofitable, for the present quotations
of bonds are lower in Europe than they
are here, whilst gold is selling at near
131. The arguments in favor of a lower
gold premium during all last week were
based solely on the reported sales which
were to take place by the government
in order to get currency; but it is now
evident that the government will not
sell gold for the present, and a reaction
of several points is lixely to be the con-
sequence.
government bonds opened at a decline '
on last night's quotation, and all the
different series were about one•fourth per
cent: lower, whilst new 1865's _consols
advanced to 113%. Some of these bonds
had, been shipped to Europe about a
year ago as an experiment, were, ne
glected for home investment, and sold
largely ,short., When money become
scarce a few days ago, on the easier
money market, these bonds advanced
and are now scarce for delivery.
The whole market is in a condition li
able to a decline of two or three per
cent. on a tight money market, to which
we are rapidly drifting..
In Stocks the market was very dull
for nearly everything except Fort
Wayne, which kept firm and 'advanced
to 120%, just prior to the closing of the
books before the election of. Directors.
'The whole market is promising towards
lower prices. Our, home market for se,
cnrities is also declining, and round lots
of some securities are held here, that
formed an occasional market East,
which can not be sold even at cones•
sions. •
Money is tightening more and more as
the demands for Spring business in
crease, whilst business is, dull. •

OPFHTE OF PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
TUESDAY, March 16, 1869.
The market was unusually .quiet to
day being devoid of that eicitement and
confusion which has prevailed for some
line past, and, consequently, presents
a more intelligent and reliable appear
ance. That prices are ranch lower is an
established fact—there is no disputing
on this point—but whether or no they
will still go lower, is the most important
question, and 'on it there is very natu
rally a conflict of views, and considera
discussion. It was reported this after
noon that die advicea from the East
were of a more cheerful charader, there
being a slightly improved demand,
without, however, anp change in prices. •
It is also said that exporters have' corn - -
menced to buy, and that they will take
a considerable amount at present quota
tions,
thought they would doubtless take
hold more freely if prices would. still
further decline, and it is possible that
some of them may hold back in hopes
of filling their ordeLs at a still further
reduction. There are those, however,
who seem to be confident that bottom
has not been touched, and that prices
are yet too much inflated, and that in.
order to have a good, healthy foreign
trade, prices must of necessity go still
lower. There is one .thing which it is •
well not to lose sight of, :and that is, that
as soon as these Eastern "bears" have •
"loaded up" they will turn "bulls"
again, and bring about the same strat
egy to put prices up, that that they have
done within the past week to break
them down.
CRUDE—The market was very quiet
today, and compared with yesterday
prices have . undergone no quotable
change. Sale of, 2,000 bbls, seller till
July Ist. at 15%; and 500 next ten days,
seller, at 1535. As noted in our last re
port, there is considerable inquiry for
early deliveries, but as a general thing
buyers are inclined to hold off in hopes
of a still further decline.
REFINED—There was but a single
sale reported. 500 bbls for the last half

ment in prices.
