FINANCE / AND TRADE.
OFFICE OF PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,
THIMSDAY, March 11, 1869.
The present- etateOf the gold and bond
market deifies all Calculations. Gold,
which had declined on the rapid advance
of bonds In Europe, advanced when
bonds declined in London, whilst to-day
the decline in gold kept pace with the
decline of bonds. Although there is all
reason to believe In an early advance of
gold, yet the present state of. the money
market, and the fall supply of gold, will
frustrate any attempt to make gold arti
licially.ecaree; on the other hand the
fear of seeing a sudden rise prevents any
material decline below present quota
tions. The market, which:was dull du
ring all day yesterday, at 135; 5 4, end
-denly advanced to 132 late In the after
moon, and opened at 131%, from which
point It alternately declined to 1313,x, and
advanced again to 131%. The demand,
,for accomodations from merchants, and
the currency wanted in the Western and
!leathern States, will most likely prevent
any attempt to purchase for the purpose
of putting gold out of the market, and
likewise will the increased shipments of
produce give more ease to the exchange
market.
In 'Government bonds the market
opened very d4ll and heavy this morn
ing, but at ifOon the demand for old
bonds increatied.and a sharp advance of
% per cent. took place for the entire list
of bonds. New 1865's being scarce, the
market having been oversold, command
ge more than 1867'5. There is a gen
eral opinion, prevailing that bonda.will
decline towards the end of this month,
and many are acting on that; but, as is
generally the case, a strong current in
one direction will soon have exhausted
itself, and on:the very movement, when
a last heivy decline is predicted, the
knowing ones set kr work and buy, and
•
thereby "cause " a 'premature advance
which will stimulate speculation and
run up prices unduly in an incredibly
shOrt time. Any purchases of bonds at
the average quotations-0 thlit
' week will;
likely prove a good investuiett.; - ; „
Stocks were dull and heavy, with a
general decline through the entire list,
and a heavy market. Investors and
speculators are afraid to buy largely at
present. The bugbear of quarterly,
statements has once,brOught many to
grief, which proved a lesson not easily
forgotten.
Express Shares are very heavy and
dull., A demand. for , Allegheny Valley
Railroad tipnd4 hasjiprung up here, bat
onirat‘ qubtations and holders
are not willing to make concessions; for
fear a new lot would come on the mar
ket.
Business dull. Money scarce. •

The stock market was heavy and de
clining throughout the day; the decline
was not coarked v but very general. The
new National Stock Exchange held a ses

Erie, of course, being the prominentfea
ture thereof.

ETROLEUM MARKET.
OFFICE OF PITYSEURGH GAZETTE;
~ THURSDAY, March n, 1869. I
The market continues excited and fev
erish, though there is but little doing.
Crude remains unchanged in price
though a little stronger in feeling and
less offering. The "fifty thin:mend bar
rel men" seem to have subsided for the
present—private telegrams reporting
that they were out of the market. There
is no disposition Manifested to sell Re
fined here, but the New Yorkers are
still selling . "short" in hopes" that by so
doing they will be able to force a break;
thus far they have not been very suc
cessful. ' It looks as If these Eastern op
erators were anxious to raise a breeze,
as the market has been rather hard on
some of them lately, though to a certain
class it makes, no difference which way
the - tide flows. so 'they manage to get
the commissions. ,
CRUDE—As already intimated has
undergone no essential change Since
yesterday, with the exception, perhaps,
of a litzle n?ore inquiry, particularly, for
spot oil, and a shade stronger feeling.
