Gold,', which was selling as low as 130% yesterday, and also as high as 132, was dull today at from 131 X to 131 X, but at the close the market becanc&firm at 132. The importing in terest 1% anxious to cover their indebted ness; since the low rate of gold itself is. an inducement, and has prevented a further shipment of bonds, the price in New 'York being one and half - per cent. higher than in London or Frankfort. Should gold advance to near 133 it is quite probable a sharp advance willtake place; which would take a large number of those by surprise who were over confident in the steady decline end the policy t o , be adopted to run dowti the premium by any means at the command of the Gov ernment. All those who preach such a course as salutary to the interest of this country will find themselves mistaken. Such a course would stop all - exports of produce, and postpone specie payment by the very cheapness of gold. Bonds would be reshipped from Europe, and gold would jump up by two or three points at once. There is but one course open to an early resumption of specie payment, and this is by *accumulating gold in the Treasury, compeling National Banks to deposit their gold: interest at the Treasury in Washington until from 25 to 30 per cent. of their circulation is covered, when the country will be ready to redeem all paper outstanding that is not needed for the necessities p of busi ness. Had such a systm n rsued, instead of letting •the e Nationalbeeu Banks compete with the “bear" and "hull" party, who could get the highest price for gold, they would now bold 33 per cent. of their circulation and be ready by July next, or sooner, to fesume. 'Bonds du were firm early in the day, but becamedull and lower, closing at a de cline of 34 per cent. Stocks fluctuating rapidly within 1 and 2 per cent. Money scarce and business dull. OP PITTSBURGH GAZETTE,I WEDNESDAY, March 10, 1869. The oil market was again considerably agitated and excited to-day, though the volume of buainess was comparatively light and compared with yesterday prices have undergone but little change. The bear movement noted yesterday, • was continued with even greater . NIG" tlence to-day, and for a time it 'looked to outsiders as if they would be successful. Early in the day there was an offer to sell fifty thousand bbla for April delivi.r • ery, and accompanying the offer to sell, was a request to name a price. This was promptly answered, and the, offer accept= ed with a price named, but it does not Sp 'pear to have been satisfactory to the would-be sellers, and after considerable parleying, the offer to 'sell was with drawn. The imression here is that these parties p did not want to sell; that the offer was only thrown out for the purpose of causing a panic, and break= ing the market, and that while the tele grams mtme from 011 City, the maker spirits of the movement were the same New York parties who sold so intich re. -. fined "short" on Monday and Tuesday. Finding themselves foiled in one move metit they attempted another, and•iled in both. It was ' the intention ofthe Pittsburghers to have taken this fifty thousand bbls., and then another bun. dred thousand additional, if it had been offered. • - CRUDE—The rude market, already intimated, was considerabl agi tated and excited to-day, though there was but little done, while compared with yesterday, prices are a shade lower. The sales were: 1,000, 1,160,•and 500. all'. on spot, at 16; and 1,000 seller till July Ist, at 16. Late in the afternoon there , was considerable inquiry for spot oil at 16, and no sellers. REFINED --The Refined market was also rather quiet and a little - offish to day, though compared with yesterday, " prices have undergone no quotable change.
