Terisrmo.—lt has been discovered re
cently in France that oak wood is almost
as well adapted for the , tanning of hides
- \ as the bark, and that almost any kind
''will answer the purpose. The principal
i
pont to be atteaded to is to make use of
1 wood cut when it is full of sap, as thereby
' the greatest amount of tannin is secured.
The wood may be used without the bark,

mrprovision was made to enforce the de

rate of progress of the work was not•

is, stated, have appropriated the sum of
$7,50 per week to carry on the demolition
of the fortresses, and it is calculated that
it will take about two thousand years to
complete the leveling of the walls.

horses or upon ,_ railroads, which,
will prove of great impertance to railroad
men, and. to the public generally. The
interior ofthecar is subdivided into four
or five compartments, by means of parti

conveyed to the troughs from water

Whiting, aged a nt four years, before
Hoh. John M. Ki kpatriek at nine A. M.,
March sth, in the District Court.
The relator, .IL H. Whiting, did
not appear perso ally in Court, \ the writ
of Hab. Corp. h ving been obtained by
his mother, Mrs. , hiting, (grand-inoth
er of thelchild) i 'o .was represented\by
Thomas M. Marshall, Esq. The respon-,
dents, through A. 51. Brown, their corm=
gel, made return to the writ that the
child k ' being their grand-daughter) was
lawfully detained by virtue oi an inden
ture of apprentice Ship made by and be
tween the Guardiatis of the Poor of the
city of Pittsburgh November 19, 1868.
The father of tlie Child was married to
the:daughter of Mr. mid Mrs. Dignam,

band, the relator,) having before that time
gone to Louisville, Kentucky, leaving
Ms wife and children here.. He came
here at the date of his wife's decease, but
itnmediately returned to Kentucky,
leaving his three infant children with
their friends here, without any provi
sion for their maintenance. The young
est child died here (in the absence of its
father, about two months after the de
cease of Mrs. Whiting; The eldest child
is with Mrs. Whiting, his grand-mother;
the other (the one', In controversy) has
remained with her maternal grand
mother, Mrs. Dignam. The relator visi
ted the child but once (in June last,)
since the death of his wife, and has not
provided for or contributed for her main
-tenance, although requested to do so.
Ilia: grand-mother, Mrs. Dignam, not '
;from any desire to keep andzrovide for
the child, but to have its le condition
fixed, made known the t acts to the
Guardians of the Poor, and temporarily
committed the child to their charge,
whereupon -they immediately executed
the indenture, providing carefully for
the comfortable maintenance and educa-
tion of the child. The little girl was in
Court, and appeared to have been affec-;
tionately cared for by her grand-parents,'
Mr. and Mrs. Dignam.
... ,
The Itutin question in the cake is' l
whether, under the circumstances of the '
case, the indenture by the guardians is'
valid or legal.
The case was fully argued before
Judge. Kirkpatrick, who will render his
decision this (Saturday) morning.

ECONOMY BUTTER CO.
ask the attention of all Interested In the reduc
tion of the extravagant cost of Butter, - to their
practical and econotelcal system of making pure
prime Batter bylbe aid of the
EX.TRACT OF BurrEß PLANT.
A brief allualon to the origin of this imcortant
discoves y may not prove uninteresting. Among
the authenticated records of the renowned Cap
tain' Claok , s voyage around the world; is found
the if Aternent, that while sojourning fora short
time on the Brazilian Coast of South America, he
observed the natives using, In the preparation of
their food, a necullar oil. which, upon ezamina
tion.hefoundto possess the appearance, taste
and Savor of Butter; upon farther inquiry, how
ever, he ascertained that It was simply a sub
stance that: the natives distilled In a crude and
imperfect manner, from a rich and luxuriant
plant that grew IspontaneOnsly and abundantly in
that warm tropical country. A few 3 ears ago,
an eminent French ehemist, while on a profes
sional visit to the tropics, made numerous e,xper-
Intents witn this remarkable production of na
.ture, and succeeded In extracting a concentrated
essence of the Vint.' The formula for its preps*
rition, , and the Bole Eight for its sale in this
country are the exclusive property of this Com
pany, by whom It was pritchased from the origi
nal discoierer. We Claim for this remarkable,
yet simple and perfectly harmless preparation—
lte.—Tbat by Its use a net gain of from 50 to 2106
per cent. is made in the manitacture of Butter.
Ad.—That Butter; . Which from age or whatever
