The farther rise of American bonds in
the European markets, and thelstili large
short interest inlB62s and 1867 e, has had a
depressing influence on the price of gold.
From 13.3;8 yesterday, the market declin
ing this evening to 1313,. So long as
there is no reaction from the steady ad
vancing tendency of A merican securities
abroad, the gold premium will tend
downward, but if anything should occur
to check the further advance of bonds,
it would cause a general scramble for
gold by speculators and Importers; yet it
is not improbabie that a much lowor rate
of premium may be reached than pre
vails now.
In Government bonds there was unu
sualexcitement on account of the scar
city of some denominations of bonds.
1862's jumped from 1143 to 117!4: and
1867's to 1121.:, at which there is somelies
itation to buy, and the supply coming
from the West will cover the present
demand. It is the nature of money
transactions, where large time saltis can
bo effected, as it is the case In Europe,
especially in Franktbrt, that bankers re
ceive the money, giving simply_ their
promise to 'deliver the bonds. After
such a sudden advance,
.as we have had
for the past two days, a reaction will set
in, and prices, if only temporary, will go
lower.
As an investment, few purchasers are
found at present among the bUsiness
communityi or thosejwho are anxious to
save up money. It will take some time
.yet before people will actually find out
what our securities are worth. The
moment they will be needed for invest
ment, and have to be brought back from
Europe, they will advance above
par in gold; but greenbacks have to ap
preciate likewise and approach the stand
ard of gold. For the present, the des
crepancy between bonds and gold is too
large, and either bonds will decline in
currency value with gold, at least from
five to eight per cent., or the bonds must
go lower and gold advance.
, Stocks were dull and lower to•day at
noon, but towards the close of the day a
lietter feeling prevailed and a general rlse
took place.
Fort Wayne was dull at 22, and Ohio
and Mississippi at 33%. Ihe latter stock
is now manipulated by the Erie clique,
who wish to get it off their hands and
take up'other stock easier to handle.

The metal market has been rather
quiet during the past week', the salea in
the aggregate being comparatively light;
but with no accumulation of stock, the
great proportion of than now arriving is
being put in on former contracts. Prices
are pretty well sustained. There Is con
siderable inquiry for asirable grades of
Foundry Irons, and but little of this
kind in market. The mills, generally,
are reported as being pretty well stocked,
and, as a consequence, the demand is firm.
This source is not as urgent as It was
some, weeks since.

There is a decidedly firmer feeling in
the Iron and Nail market, and with
orders flowing in freely, and redticed
stocks, manufacturers generally antici
pate an advance. . Indeed, even now,
there are some who are not disposed to .
sell Nails at the present price, 4;4 and '";
but very few, if any, would accept that
for a round lot; and this being the case,
all of our manufacturers • have 'quite as ;
many orders tie they care about filling. !
It is expected that there will be a heavy
demand, both from ,the West and South,
for Iron and Nails, as stooks in all of the
Southern and Western markets lire very
much' reduced, and the Southern people ;
are better able to buy , than they have i
been 'at any time since the war. •
It may not be oat of place to state in
this connection that there is no uniform
itrof prices a s our manufactures do not
adhere to the card fates, andsach house,
we believe, has its own price and terms.
