OFFICE or Prrremrnorc Gamerrs,
SATIIRDAT, February 20, 1869.
The low opening price of gold , 133%,
on Saturday, induced a great many short
sellers to cover themselves, casced by
the increased demand for bills and the
advancing tendency of U. S. bonds,
in the European and home markets. The
demand for bonds comes especially from
Frankfort, where much capital is held
that had recently been Withdrawn from
the bourse of Paris during the time of
the Paris - Conference. Europeans are
I more anxious now to get possessed of
our bonds, because they expect a higher
currency price nere and a gradual ap
proach of the greenback currency to the
gold standard, which would then en
hance the cost of bonds to them. This
desire from European capitalists to buy
bonds lessens the available supply for
speculative purposes here, and unless
gold declines at least from 15 to 20 per
cent. during the coming season, we see
nothing that would prevent bonds from
reaching 125 or .a higher rate tempora
rily. What, ultimately, the premium on
gold would be, is entirely dependent on
the condition of this season's crop of
cereals, cotton, te.c. Good crops are
needed to permanently depress gold to a
par with paper, or vice versa. Since the
increased shipments of American securi
ties this season have increased our for
eign indebtedneas to such an .amount
that will require the entire custom house
revenue of the country to pay the inter
est, to check foreign Importations of
manufactured goods would -be our main
object, and since legislation can only
augment the evil, a fenaedY is found in
the steadily decreasinn premium on gold,
which will only enable the importer to
sell his gods at a lois:
The coming week is likely to witness a
lively market in governments and a
steady depreciation of the stocks of rail
road shares and other speculative securi
ties. The decline in Pacific Mail is the
forerunner 'of other depreciations in the ,
Erio clique. atoCks, and the.early com- -
pletion of the Pacific Railroads will
offer a safer speculative.secuilty_ in the
shapeefthe bonds of these roads. They
are now quoted in Frankfort at 71 to 72,
only a difference of 6 per cent. from
18625, 5-20's commanding 114% here. A
lively demand. has sprung up in them
in New "kork, and leading dealers have
made contracts to be supplied for a short
period at presvit quotations. Oar en
terprising`townsman, Ph. R. Mertz,
Banker, has secured a lot. There is an
'increased demand for Connellsville
bonds and etocts, induced by the de
termined way in which the Company
*prosecutes thecompletion of its road.

PETROLEUM MARKET.
OFFICE OF PITTSBURGH GAZETTE, i
SATURDAY, Feb. 20, 1869, i
GENERAL REVIEW.
The market has been rather slow, and
a little laggish during the past week,
and;compared with the early part of the
week, prices are a shade lower, though
there has, as yet, been nothing like what
is generally termed a break. There
seems/to be a feeling prevailing, and it
has increased .in strength during the
past few days, that a reaction is likely to
take place, though there are but few, if'
any,as yet who are willing to operate with
this as a basis, as it is feared , that the
- bull element is not dead only, sleeping,
and 'night possibly, at any moment, put
the market back to where it was a week
an'o, and this has a tendency, for the time
#i
being, to restrict business, and r tard op-
t
atlons. There is 'no disguising he fact,
however, that the bear interest a begin
ning is to put on a bolder front, and it is
equally true that the market, during the
past two or three days, has ruled slightly :
in their favor, being . a - little 'weak, and
prices, as already intimated, a shade ;:
lower. There is no telling, however, but
what this may be fully recovered Within i
the next few days, and - that before
another week closes, prices may touch a
point that has not yet been reached this
year. As already noted, however, the* I,
market to-day, was a little offish and it 2.
is said - that Xevr York was the cause
of it. ,
