The politicians and the gossips are,
-keenly disappointed with Grant's decision

Cameron takes an independent position.

the new law is evaded. The price has

looked forward with more interest in
revenueclicles than anywhere else,and
the immediate appointment by Gneral
Grant of a- Commissioner of Internal
Revenue is looked upon as far more nec

a Secretary of the Treasury. The two
names most pviminently mentioned for
the position in public circles are .District
Attorney Tracy, of New York, and Con
gressman Delano, 'of Ohio.
In view of General* Grant's refuial to

custom on the last day of the session„

THE extraordinary and constantly in
creasing demand for iron and steel for
mechanical purposes, and the great im
portance that these should be of the best
possible quality, have led to the establish

THE King of Prussia, shortly after the
close of the campaign of 180 e, conceived
an odd scheme with a view to the frater
,nization of the soldiers who had fought
iigaitist each other in that war. Large
delegations of Austrum % Italian, Prussian,
North and South German soldiers were
to meet at some central point in Germany,
and brilliant festivities were to take place
in their honor. • It is said that Francis
Joseph wasmt averse to the project, but
that his relations at the Austrian Court
strongly urged him to reject it, and that
Beust, as soon as he heard of it, gave the .
same adviceLtalb.e..Empero444llltag him
that a festival of this description would be
highly distasteful to France.
A sraTzwitem that two young , women
have made application to become mem
bers of the Cornell University, and that
lifi.CAiraell has inforined them that if
they present 'themselves next fall they
will be received, is , denied by the Ithaca
Journal, :which says that if these , two
ladies, .or any other two ladles, present
themselves next fall , for the purpose of
entering. the University they will meet
disappointment. No one has had any
authority, from Mr. ' Cornell to give cur

will not be admitted next fall, nor for
many falls to come, if ever. • At present
the faeulty and trustees are nearly unani:

of women to the University is impracti
