February 17, 1869. Gold remains steady at 135%. The active demand for-money was expected . . to have a depressing influence on the premium, but the parties who hold large amounts on speculation, seem to be de termined to hold out for their own pri ces. It is now apparent that the ship. meats of bonds were much smallerithan it was reported, and the rise here was due to an over speculation on the part of the short sellers. Should it turn out that there is no surplus of exchange on the, market by Saturday, gold will have to: be shipped and a rise in the premium would be inevitable. The opening price of bonds was about % to % per cent. lower than last night's closing quotations, but at noon the de decline amounted as much as 1% per cent. for the entire list. New 65's were , very. weak and dull. Stocks declined about 2 per" cent for the entire list on ac count of the scarcity of money; Market closed weak and dull with a downward tendency. For instance, the great proportion of the oil made here is exported to foreign-- - countries, no account of which is made to the government in the way of taxes, and, as a matter of course, the Internal Revenue Commissioner's report cannot and does not show the ,quantity of oil made in Pittsburgh. We would also state, for the inforination of that paper, that nearly, If not entirely, one-third of ' the entire product of crude in the Ven ango'regions was consumed here'in 1868, leaving the other two-thirds for the rest of the world, of which Cleveland gets its proportion, we do not know hew much, but feel`pretty well satisfied that it iris nothing like the one-third of the whole. The general markets are dull and neglected, with a very light volume of business, and prices generally are weak with a drooping tendency., Sugars are considerably excited, as the stock in New York is reported lighter than it has been for twenty-five years.
