The closing quotations last night and
the opening trice of to-day would indi
cate a strong and advancing market,
but towards noon the quotations were
lower, and the market was dull at one
time. Every effort &made by the bull
party to advance the market, but 'so
far, any attempt failed, for the reason
that gold is so plenty that - the, kicking
up of from five to ten millions would
not produce a sufficient scarcity to find
difficulty in borrowinqiill the gold that
is sold on Contracts. Nothing can ad
vance, therefore, the price until ship.
meats set in again for remittance to
Europe and the gold balance on the mar
ket is more reduced.
Government bonds were very strong
. ,
early this morning', but towards noon
fell off about y, 'to
. 1 1‘ per cent. on new
bonds, on account of large realizations
on round lots bought at the depression
last week.
Stocks are inactive but firm on all the
different roads except the Erie connec
tions. There is an indisposition to ope
rate at present either way, but judging
from experience a sharp advance is al
most certain to come, providing the
bank statement is in any way favorably

gradually improving.

—The Chicago Repub lican, of Wednes
day, says: There was a very fair in
quiry for loans today, and the money
market was moderately active and firm
at the current rate of interest, 10 per
'cent. per annum. The supply is fair,
and quite equal to the demand, so that
those entitled to flavors have no diffi
culty in obtaining all the accommoda
tions desired, - when the collateral of
fered is of a satisfactory character.
Those banks doing almost exclusively a
grain and provision business, generally
report money close; those whose busi
ness is divided up among all classes of
business report the market as comfort
ably easy. The movement of currency
to and from the interior is rather against
the city, more 'being sent out than is
coming in.
